In the mid 80s, there was a software called "magic" something.
it allows you to change a monochrome display from text mode to graphics mode. Then you can play game on it. I can't recall exactly but with some melting/animation effect in the intro screen. I Believe it ran on dos 3.3
Hopefully any ideas?
Thanks
Jack

SIMCGA does the same thing, for the most part, and is more well-known.

The screenshot is linked from another thread where a problem was reported with the app in recent releases of DOSBox. I don't have the software; but it displays a copyright, so its license probably does not allow copying. I think the reported problem may have been fixed in SVN, where a fix was made for SpaceWar with hercules video, but can't be sure. SIMCGA will do the same thing as Magic Key, if running CGA games on a monochrome display is something you really want to re-experience for nostalgia, or whatever reason.

Or you can find an old VGA grayscale monitor and play on that.

The CGA on hercules simulators use dithering/banding to approximate shades, so the appearance is rather different than a VGA mono display. For example, here is a shot of Rampage (which does not have built-in support for hercules) in CGA mode using SIMCGA 4.0 and machine=hercules in DOSBox 0.74:

I can confirm that the SpaceWar hercules fix (r3617) has fixed the problem with Magic Key reported in the thread linked in one of my previous comments. Magic Key uses a different resolution than SIMCGA (640x200 vs. 640x300) and different dithering. If I had to choose, I think the Magic Key appearance is nicer when the aspect is corrected to 4:3, as there is less distortion than with SIMCGA.
