Yes, I have read the readme file. I've done the autodectection for the sound thing and it detects the creative labs soundblaster. However it does not seem to be working with my game and I'm not smart enough to understand what the rest of the readme is trying to get me to do. I have made sure the sound on my computer works otherwise and is not on mute. I'm running windows xp and I've got DOSBox 0.72

When I go to run the program it says illegal command: DRIVERS/SBLASTER and as the game is starting it says "No sound driver resident."

the readme says:
Be sure that the sound is correctly configured in the game. This might be done during the installation or with a setup/setsound utility that accompanies the game. First see if an autodetection option is provided. ((I have done this. It came up with Soundblaster.))

If there is none try selecting soundblaster or soundblaster16 with the default settings being "address=220 irq=7 dma=1". ((I've done this too. It didn't help any at all))

You might also want to select midi at address 330 as music device. The parameters of the emulated soundcards can be changed in the DOSBox configuration file. If you still don't get any sound set the core to normal and use some lower fixed cycles value (like cycles=2000). Also assure that your host operating sound does provide sound. ((this is where I get confused. . . ))

If you need any more information to help me solve the problem let me know.

Because Zork wouldn't run when I didn't have the dosbox.

Self-deprecation will get you nowhere.

The question is why you're using 0.72 when 0.74 is the latest version. 0.72 is actually pretty old now.

Anyway, Return to Zork is now supported by ScummVM. You might have a slightly easier time getting it to run that way.

I just downloaded the dosbox yesterday and I thought I was getting the latest version but I guess the site I downloaded it from didn't have the latest. I'll try the latest version of DOSbox and the ScummVM that you recommended. Thanks!

Okay, well I downloaded the new version of DOSBox and get the same problems. I'm not sure how to make Return to Zork work in the other thing but I haven't gone through the whole FAQ on it.

Update: WOOT!!! It works!!!! yay! thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used the ScummVM thing. It took me a minute to figure out how to get the game started on that but once I did it worked great.
