GTA shooting problem

I've managed to get GTA and GTA London running through DOSBox, but I have one problem. I can't shoot. The manual says ctrl is the shoot key but it does nothing. All the other keys work fine. It's hard to blow up stuff when I can't make my rocket launcher work. DX Does anyone know how to fix this?

I also DLed the expansion pack for London 1961, but I double click the .exe and it hangs indefinitely.

Thanks for any help.

See the DOSBox keymapper, you can shoot and steal in gta just fine

otherwise, open a damn box (with your shoot key) and get a damn pistol

In theory, the latest nVidia drivers fixed compatibility problems with GTA, but in order to take advantage of the fix you'll have to rename the London 1961 EXE to "Grand Theft Auto.exe".

The DOSBox keymapper says the ctrl key is bonded correctly, but the ctrl key still won't work in GTA.

Run k.exe and setup your controls there. If that doesn't work, then... i hope you like taking the pacifist challenge throughout!

That worked, thanks. It had the wrong ctrl key set up. One of mine doesn't work anymore due to an alcoholic accident on my keyboard. 🤣

I renamed the GTA 1961 file but now it won't run at all.

So... What's the difference between "hangs indefinitely" and "won't run at all" ?

Since this is a Windows program, you should probably mention your version of Windows and your video card - or you could just start a new thread. If it is an nVidia, do you have the most recent drivers?

Won't run at all (when i rename it to Grand Theft Auto.exe).

Hangs indefinitely (if I don't rename it). Lets me click Setup then unzips data1.cab then freezes.

My video card is an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo. I tried updating the drivers and it said it couldn't find a better version than the currently installed one.

I'm not running GTA through Windows though; I had to use DOSBox to make it work.

Oh, you're trying to run the installer. That's an entirely different matter!

Since it's evidently just a WinZip self extractor, you can open Gtal1961.exe with any archiver program (I like IZArc) and extract all the files in it manually to a temporary folder somewhere. The folder should then presumably have a setup.exe - what happens if you try to run it then?

Ok tried that. Setup does nothing. However, data1.cab doesn't extract; it stays in WinRAR archive form and when I click on it it says it's either an unknown format or damaged.

The only place I could find a GTA 1961 download that worked was the Rockstar games GTA London site. Can anyone else give me a different site for the download please, so I can see if the one on Rockstar is corrupt or not.

That doesn't make any sense. data1.cab is not in "WinRAR archive form". You might have associated .cab files with WinRAR, but that doesn't mean WinRAR is going to be able to open all .cab files - and you don't want to open cab files.

Let me make sure you understand. This is what you should see in WinRAR:

You want to extract all these files (including the subfolder) to a temporary folder somewhere on your hard drive, and then run Setup.exe. Is that what you did?

And the archive definitely isn't corrupt, or you'd never be able to extract the files in the first place. It actually runs fine for me, except of course I don't have an earlier version of GTA London installed, so I can't get very far.

Yes, that's what I've done now. I doubleclicked setup.exe and nothing happened.

About 15 mins later I got "The request to end the selected 16 bit task has timed out. The Win 16 Subsystem may be unstable. Press ok to terminate or cancel to leave running." when I shut down my comp.

I do have the GTA London CD in the drive. I even tried running setup through DOSBox, seeing as GTA and GTA London would only work via DOSBox and the Windows versions wouldn't run at all. But it wouldn't load it there either.

This is a problem with your system and not GTA London.

I did a Google search for <"The Win 16 Subsystem may be unstable."> and several useful-looking links came up.
