Have installed Tomb Raider on WinXP using Glidos installation Wizard, latest VDMSdownloaded file and Glidos setup program. Two problems:
1 no full screen
2 the sound is v good, but the music that should appear in Level one, in the middle (when she runs down some stairs just before the second door with switch to pull), does not come on.
Any suggestions?

1. Fullscreen=YES in glidos.ini will fix that.
2. Using SAPUCDEX will fix that.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Best to set fullscreen mode with the "Adjust" button. When you alter the glidos.ini file you have to get the line exactly right including spacing and the case of the characters.

And I think that particular sound is only in the PlayStation version of TR1. The PlayStation version had a lot of music that didn't make it into the PC version.

Thank you Colin and Glidos for your replies!

Just one question (for those who do not speak as many languages as you, Colin, state on your site, and exotic they are too!) : what on earth (or rather in cyberspace) is SAPUCDEX?

And thanks Glidos for your Wizard, the game now works fine on my laptop, shame about the music, it is so lovely.

Cheers
Cate

Computer-illiterate question:

I have read the Sapucdex thread and found where to download it. If I download it:
1. To what file should I download it? Glidos or VDM or what?
2. Does it require some (for ordinary mortals) complicated manipulations to make it work?

Running it with VDMSound is very easy, but I'm presuming that running it with GliDOS is a different thing. I'm guessing that you would have to edit your VDMS.INI file. Is that right Paul?

I don't know really. I'd have guessed editing autoexec.nt to use sapucdex was the right thing to do.

That's what I do 😀

Look into your C:\WINNT\system32 directory for a text file called AUTOEXEC.NT, edit it with Notepad or Wordpad and locate the following lines:

REM Install CD ROM extensions
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\mscdexnt.exe

You need to modify the last part so the path points to SAPUCDEX instead of MSCDEXNT. Providing that you have copied SAPUCDEX into the system32 folder, your script should now look like this:

REM Install CD ROM extensions
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\sapucdex.exe

That's all you need to do. Save the file, close Notepad, reboot. Just be careful that the file is still named AUTOEXEC.NT and doesn't have any new extension (like .TXT) added to it.

Kaminari,

thank you for your suggestions.
I have entered system 32 (in XP), where the AUTOEXEC.NT (not a textfile it would seem) cannot be opened because - message says -windows doesn't know how to open it.
I followed another thread, downloaded SAPUCDEX into VDMSound file and there I edited the AUTOEXEC file.
Result: There is music now in the first movie sequence (just before part one, when Lara is with her guide just before entering the cave) but there does not seem to be any music in the first part of the game - I have not played the other ones as I know there should be music early in part one when she runs down the stairs before the second switch.
AND
the Glidos logos shows once more!

try open with instead of open

or rename the autoexec.nt to autexec.txt first.
edit it and rename it back.
ignore stuff like " may render useless"

We are talking about the AUTOEXEC.NT file in the System32 file in the Windows file in drive C:/, aren't we?

yeps. If you fear you may break something backup the files first.

Can't he place copies of those files in his specific game directory and use those without tampering with the system's originals?

In fact I had to revert to the original AUTOEXEC.NT because when I put sapucdex in system32 all music in TR disappeared; so now I have reverted to mscdexnt in system32, but I run VDMSound with sapucdex. This gives me music at the start of the game and in the movie sequences, but only sound effects in the game. Maybe Paul is right: the music inside the game is for Playstation only. I wish someone would enlighten me on that issue: is there anyone who has music inside the game on the PC?

You get ghostly background sounds that are played by the game as music, but there is no actual music, which is a shame.

If you're talking about the 'event' tunes that play in the PSX version when a wolf, a raptor, a boulder, etc appears... then the answer is simple: they don't exist in the PC version. On the other hand, you should still be able to hear the 'environmental' tunes like wind, water drops, heartbeats and so on (since these are Redbook audio tracks too).

OK, I think what's happened here is a little confusion between sound effects and music.

The PC version only has music for the title screen and in certain FMV movies. The in-game audio consists of sound effects generated from the (emulated) soundcard and a looping audio track that provides "ambiance". Like Paul said, the "special music" reserved for certain sequences aren't in the PC version.

Place the PC version in your computer and play the audio with the Media Player. You'll see it only has 9 audio tracks (at least the Gold version does, an earlier version may have a few more). Place the Playstation version in your PC and play it with the media player and you should have 69 audio tracks.

However, notice that a number of these tracks are less than 10 seconds in length. At least a portion of these are still in the PC game, but play from within the game now instead of playing off of the CD (a better way, since it allows for instantaneous response instead of seeking a track, then playing it).

Having said that, there are still a number of audio tracks/musical cues missing from the PC version.

OK, thanks, now I understand. Is the PSX version of all games better than the PC one? What about the other TR? Especially the latest? Should one buy PC or PSX? Do all PSX games have music you can play with Windows media player or is it specific to TR?

I think it is only Tr1 where there is a difference, but yes: there are some very effective uses of music that are in the PSX version but not the PC version. I may one day be able to make Glidos play the bits of music on the PC at the places where they appear in the PSX version, but I'm not at the moment looking at dong that.
