Hi folks!

I'm a real newbee in creating batch files. I'm using DosBox for an old DOS App called Projis because it won't run within Win 7 (NOT even in any compatibility mode). But now I'm getting tired of typing all DOS commands in order to execute the DOS App. Therefore I'd like to build a batch file or Windows-shortcut (lnk) linked directly to the DOS App.

Here some details.

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
DOS App. location: C:\samifi\samtech\projis\projis.exe

The directory structure looks like this and HAS TO BE like this, otherwise the App. won't work.

C:\samifi
---- samtech
-------edit
-------projis
---------projis.exe

Can anybody be so kind and help me to create a Windows-shortcut or batch file in oder to launch the DOS App. by a simple dubble click?

Many thanks to all responders,
tonne

Hey tonne,

well I'm not sure if I understood this right:

C:\samifi
---- samtech
-------edit
-------projis
---------projis.exe

but if I'm right it looks like this:

C:\samifi\samtech\edit\projis\projis.exe

... am I right ? If yes then a simple batch would be:

REM -- Batchfile to run Projis --
@ECHO OFF
CLS
C:
CD \
CD SAMIFI\SAMTECH\EDIT\PROJIS
PROJIS.EXE

The REM is only to comment things so you don't need it. @ECHO OFF isnt' needed too.

I hope that was what you asked for and that it would help. If not please ask again (with an a bit more clearly structure 😉) ...

Hi Vincent. 😀

Thx 4 your quick answer and sorry 4 my unclearly explanaition. Maybe the following gives you a definite idea of my concern:

GOAL:
My aim was to run my old DOS App "projis.exe" within Windows 7.

PROBLEM A)
Unfotunately it doesn't launch within Windows 7. NOT even in any compatibility mode (Win 95/98, Win2K, XP etc.)!

PARTIAL SUCCESS:
So I figured out, that "projis.exe" is able to be run within DosBox. Here it works as expected. So far so good ... but ...

PROBLEM B)
But after starting DosBox, I first have to mount C:, call several dirctories (because the "projis.exe" MUST be located within mentioned drectory structure, otherwise it won't work) and then finaly execute the DOS programm. This takes alot of typing work!

SOLUTION?
For my convenience I'd like to have an ICON/LINK on my Windows7 desktop which launches the DOS App "projis.exe" by dubbleclicking it. Thats all.

MY IDEA/REQUEST:
So I thought I'd be needing sth. like a batch file, wich fires up DOSBOX and then launches the DOS App "projis.exe" in one procedure. But I don't know how to do this!?

Hopefully waiting for any solution,
tonne

By the way: I pasted the code you've sent me into a .txt file, then renamed the file extension to .bat - but on dubbleclick it still opens with Windows editor.

You can type those commands into the autoexec section of the DOSBox settings.
You can also try a front end which will make a desktop shortcut for you.

Hey SKARDAVNELNATE.

Sounds to be a good solution. But actually I have no idea how to do this. Could you first tell me which file I have to edit (Pls see attached screenshot of my DosBox's files). And secondly pls post exactly the code I have to build into the file.

Thank you very much for your detailed help.

Hey tonne,
looks like you didn't write a dosbox.conf file while using dosbox.
If that suggestion make you feel like "ah?" then there is a step by step explaination:

1. Run dosbox
2. on the promt type "config -writeconf dosbox.conf"
3. quit dosbox
4. Go into your dosbox directory and open the file "dosbox.conf".
Now you have to make some changes. In most cases you just need to edit
the ammount of memory, the screenresolution and the autoexec
section(like mentioned by SKARDAVNELNATE). Okey, here are the
commands you'll have to enter to don't have to enter all every time running
dosbox (damn this sentence xD)....

in the autoexec section:
---------------------------
mount c c:\
c:
cd samifi\samtech\edit\projis
projis.exe

If you want to use dosbox for more applications then it might be shitty to
always have to quit "projis" first before you can run another app. For that
case use a simple batchfile. So you have to write the first both lines into
your dosbox.conf in the autoexec section:

mount c c:\
c:

... and the batchfile could look like this:

@ECHO OFF
CLS
CD samifi\samtech\edit\projis
projis.exe

If you choose the second way to do it then -- you know it -- you only have to type the name of the batchfile in dosbox...

Okay... if you didn't see dosbox.conf before, here is one of my confs... this
one is from 0.74:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# This is the configurationfile for DOSBox 0.74. (Please use the latest version of DOSBox)
# Lines starting with a # are commentlines and are ignored by DOSBox.
# They are used to (briefly) document the effect of each option.

# fullscreen: Start dosbox directly in fullscreen. (Press ALT-Enter to go back)
# fulldouble: Use double buffering in fullscreen. It can reduce screen flickering, but it can also result in a slow DOSBox.
# fullresolution: What resolution to use for fullscreen: original or fixed size (e.g. 1024x768).
# Using your monitor's native resolution with aspect=true might give the best results.
# If you end up with small window on a large screen, try an output different from surface.
# windowresolution: Scale the window to this size IF the output device supports hardware scaling.
# (output=surface does not!)

# priority: Priority levels for dosbox. Second entry behind the comma is for when dosbox is not focused/minimized.
# pause is only valid for the second entry.
# Possible values: lowest, lower, normal, higher, highest, pause.
# mapperfile: File used to load/save the key/event mappings from. Resetmapper only works with the defaul value.

I hope that'll be helpful ^^ ....

And one last thing:

You said you copied the batchfile from the first answer into a simple textfile, renamed it to "*.bat" and when you ran it, it just opened the file
in a texteditor. Little question: Windows has a little option that - if it already knows the datatype - don't show you the extension of the file. Did you deactivated this? If not you can do this in the menu "Advanced" ->Folderoptions ( I think it's called advanced - I'm using German language in Windows XP ^^ ). here's a picture (WinXP)

Hey Vincent.

Thank you very much for your detailed help. With your guidance I was able to figure out the following:

The code written into the autoexec section within dosbox.conf MUST be like this (I hat to create a new higher ranking directory and I had to consider case sensitivity!):

[autoexec]
mount c c:\runindosbox
c:
cd samifi
cd samtech
cd projis
Projis.exe

Any other "call directory" command does not work for some reasons. But now everything is fine. Again many, many thx !!

take care and
best regards,
tonne 😀

Hey Vince.Bloodworks
looks like you didn't noticed DOSBox 0.74 Options.bat file while using dosbox.
If that suggestion make you feel like "ah?" check file DOSBox 0.74 Manual.txt too.

No no everything is right ... I made all the same way I did in in the past...
and because all works great I'm glad.

But thanks for the "notice". ... I think I'll remember it someday 😁

You can get to the DOSBox setting from the Start Menu.
DOSBox-0.74 > Options > DOSBox 0.74 Options

For the autoexec section this should also work:
mount c c:\runindosbox
c:
cd\ samifi\samtech\projis
Projis.exe

Vince.Bloodworks but it won't for others, so don't suggest it again if you haven't read the manual.
