I've been looking for a Apocalypse 5D on ebay for at least 5 years now...nothing. 😒 I'm intested in the Kyro cards, just don't want to pay for them. 😀

Hi,

I was just doing a web search and came across your posting.... 😀

I've got some Apocalypse 3D and 5D cards.....some are brand new - I got them for a Linux project a few years ago, but it came to nothing....

Seems a shame to chuck them away....I think I've got some extra memory kits that will fit some of them.....

Let me know and I'll put them on ebay for anyone....

That can't be a 5D, there are no VGA or 1/8" audio outputs.

it's not -- that's why i think a 5D would be much more expensive.

OR that PCchips card is just too expensive. 😉

P.S. don't give up hope yet, bushwack! Anything can happen! should one come my way i will pass it to you since you seems so desperate for this one 😁

Oh come on people, that card is absurdly overpriced. I would not give 80 dollars even for an Apocalypse 5D Sonic. 😜
I bought a 3Dx with a driver CD for 30, and don't think it was worth it.(at least the card, a CD contains good stuff that I can't otherwise on teh intarwebz - will be sharing if I can find it 😊 )

An attempt to procure a Matrox m3D around six years ago turned out to be a dud - upon installing and firing the system up the system didn't even see it... 'twas simply fried. The opportunity to try again hasn't come up since.

However, I owned a Kyro II for a couple of years before I finally broke down and snagged a friend's secondhand Geforce3. The DirectX 6 featureset posed some interesting problems: there was no support for compressed alpha-blended textures, so certain behavior (Quake III's transparent gibs, coronas, particle effects, &c.) slowed performance down when things got busy. Increasing resolution sometimes resulted in bizarre, non-linear performance scaling ussues. The two-pipelined architecture also didn't cope well with antialiasing or anisotropy. Pairing those two up was a pretty certain way to make the card choke, frequently to the point of crashing the application (!). The lack of cubemapping support occasionally reared its head in Unreal Engine 2.x games, though didn't amount to much in real-world terms.

All of that said, it was terrific for older applications. 16-bit applications literally couldn't look better than they did on the Kyro II, which rendered everything at 32-bit accuracy and then finally did a high-quality downsampling just before the image was sent to the RAMDAC. The first two Serious Sam games looked wonderful and ran nearly as well as they managed on the GeForce3, Quake III Arena and its countless engine-sharing offspring glowed, and even Unreal II grunted along with good cheer.

The card is sensitive to certain PCI settings in the BIOS, forgot what though

The only problem I've ever had with these cards is are IRQ conflicts, but that is not uncommon with pre-millennia computers packed with their PCI slots packed full.

Don't forget to clean the contacts!

I've got one, it doesn't seem to play nice with my Voodoo2/G200 setup though.
SGL Seems to work okay but direct3d on it insta crashes, could be a driver issue though.

Practicality may be winning out over nostalgia here, I might consider listing it - I even have the CD it came with. 😀
IIRC These cards needed PCI VGA Palette Snoop to be enabled.

[Edit]
m3D

$80 For something like this is totally unreasonable though, kinda like people listing their voodoo2s for $100+.
If I weren't broke as hell, the most I'd pay for either would be $35 or so.

Just got this. Seems interesting. 5 games included. Contents in new condition. Bargain! 😀
It's a Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 64MB video card. Even comes with a stick of 128MB PC-133 SDRAM!
Sorry about the poor pic.

It has to be a vendor special or something, as that usually comes with no additional ram and Myst III.

I did eventually try every UnrealEngine1 SGLDrv.dll ever released, none of them work with UE1.5 games. According to dependency walker, they're all Engine/Core.dll regressions. 🙁

I made like a swaaye and captured The Happy Fun Neon Sign Hallway for comparison purposes...

now you can compare between 1997 vs 2000! Both 1024x768x16 (max pcx2 res) on the same saved spot.

CAN YOU SPOT THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN POWERVR FIRST GEN VS POWERVR THIRD GEN!?!?!?

-Kyro is shifted towards green
-Z buffering (if that's what it is) is better on Kyro (look at gun)
-texture filtering is better on Kyro
-lighting looks different but I thought that would be all in software?

Received the PowerVR version of Mechwarrior 2 today! Installed it as soon as I got home and HOLY SHIT this is the best looking version of Mechwarrior 2 I've seen so far overall. The fog effects really are something else. On top of that, the mouse works fine (both 3Dfx and ATi Rage versions had really jerky mouse controls for some reason).

Having just dabbled with PowerVR stuff for about a week, consider me a fan!

Enjoy these shots (taken with a camera but I think they still look decent):
