I installed Dune II on DOSBox with the necessary patches. Now in setup I can select three devices: music, sound effects and digitized samples. Since I'm using Virtual Sound Canvas I selected Sound Canvas for music - it works great. Also digitized samples work on the emulated Sound Blaster Pro. But I'm not sure what should I select for sound effects (always though SFX=digitized music, but it seems I was wrong). If I select Sound Blaster Pro for sound effects I hear the effects in the intro very well. But if I select Sound Canvas for sound effects they either are missing or are so subtle I can't hear them. How should the sound effects sound on a Sound Canvas?

Bonus: can I have both digitized samples and subtitles?

I guess you're referring to the optional (also called "beta" in its documentation) setup program for Dune II.

The first choice, "Play sound from", is called "Music Score Source" in the confirmation screen, which is a bit clearer, because this choice is for music.

The second choice, "sound effects", is for weapon sounds, explosions, etc. This is the source for such sounds IF there is no digital sample for the sound OR you don't choose a sampled source in the next option; it does practically nothing when you configure a digitized sound source. Using a synthesizer here generally gives weak/unconvincing sounds, but I think OPL sources are a bit better.

The third choice, "digitized samples", is for playing sound effects when a sampled sound is available, and for speech. You get subtitles when you set this to "No Digitized Sounds". AFAIK there is no way to get subtitles when using a digitized sound source without hacking the game, but it is almost certainly possible to make such a hack.

Yes, it's the Multiple Sound Device Patch (Beta) (09/22/93)
So it seems SB Pro is the best option for sound effects, since at least it gives some sounds when selected. Thanks for the answer.
