I'm a big fan of the Warcraft series myself and I'd like to help you if I can. For playing the first game I suggest that you patch the game to 1.21. If you don't like to have the CD in drive all the time and also don't want to use a crack, there's another possibility you might want to consider: Get the floppy version. It's identical the the cd version except for the rendered videos being a series of pics instead of a full animation and the mission text not being spoken. But these videos are not really important at all as the story is told in scrolling text, anyway. So the floppy version is fine to go as well - if you can find it somewhere that is.
BTW.: Playing Warcraft 1 these days is a bit... Well, it takes some time to get used to. But it's well worth it as it is a really good game actually. After playing a while you won't miss right-clicking to give orders anymore. You just have to know a few things.
1. You can only command groups of up to 4 units at a time.
2. You can select these by either clicking at one after another and holding shift after the first one or by drawing a box around them while holding ctrl.
3. Use keyboard shortcuts. Pressing 'm' and left-clicking somewhere when you selected units and they'll move. Do the same with 'a' to attack, etc.
4. Be sure to play the humans first if you have difficulties to get along with the game! (Their archers have a better range than the orcish spearmen + they have healers and are thus easier to play).
If you mind these you should be good to play. As I already said, it's a good game. Give it another chance and you'll be rewarded by a rich story, a nice and dark atmosphere and gaming elements unique to the first part. Should you run into any problems I might be able to help you with it, just ask again.
About WC2: Yeah, that scrolling thing is annoying actually. For some reason they didn't think of faster computers in the future when coding this game. For WC1 they did! The only thing that's too fast there is the water animation (looks strange). If you can't get scrolling in WC2 to your liking, I suggest using the keyboard arrow keys. I found it easier to navigate with them. You might also consider buying the Warcraft II BNE (Battle.net edition) that works well and allows for C&C-style grouping (ctrl + number to save a group) which makes the game even easier for beginners. However it's for Windows. The game can of cause be well completed with the old version it. Keep in mind that you can alt + click a unit to restore the group it was part of last in this case.
And for getting it to work without cd and not by using a crack, I suggest that you simply create an iso image of the game cd and mount in in dosbox. If space is not an issue for you generally, I suggest doing this for every game that you play now and then. CD drives are slow and cds damageable. Its always a good thing to have images of your games on your hard drive. And the old dos games shouldn't have any copy protection. If you mount the image with '-t cdrom' they should be fine.
