I downloaded the VGA remake of King's Quest, unzipped it, and ran the install program. When I get to the point where I'm prompted to type in my drive letter, I do so and get booted out of the install program with this error.

illegal command instgame.bat

I tried other possible drives<Z and D> but nothing seemed to work. I set the config file to automount my C hard drive so I'd like to have some idea of the problem.

Two points, AFAIK kings quest is not freeware and abandonware is not legal. Also look at sierrahelp.com for sierra games dosbox installers.

The VGA remake is a fan project and is freely available from http://www.agdinteractive.com/games/kq1/downl … d/download.html

Its not actually a DOS program so you shouldn't be trying to run it in DOSBox.

If you have issues you would be better off asking on their own forum:

The VGA remake is not zipped. If you downloaded a ZIP file, you did not download it from the game's creators. From your error, it sounds like you downloaded an illegal copy of the the Sierra SCI remake. Download the legal AGDI VGA remake from AGDI's site from the link that DonutKing posted. If you want the Sierra SCI version, go to Steam or look for the 2006 collection. GOG has the original AGI version.
