Leo is a technical editor --- actually a front end for TeX --- that runs on DOS. I used that program with Win98, but was no longer able to use it when I switched to XP. Recently, an article in the Notices of the American Mathematical Society stated that people are now using Leo with DOSbox. I downloaded DOSbox and followed the instructions but there is a problem --- apparently with the .pif file. Does anyone here know exactly how to set up to run Leo with DOSbox? Thanks.

Read the 60 seconds guide in the guide section. Pif files are for the Windows commandline thus can't be run in Dosbox.

PIF files can be run in DOSBox, but one will need to install Window 3.1 in DOSBox first. Generally PIFs are only needed to launch DOS programs from Windows, so a more direct launch mechanism is likely provided.

I searched "60 seconds guide" in the guide section. there are 2210 matches on at least 89 pages. Can you give the url for the "60 seconds guide" to which you refer? Also, I am not trying to run a .pif file. The cmd line I am using is

"J:\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe -userconf" "J:\LEO\LEO.EXE"

The error message says:

16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem

C:\Docume~1\I\Deskto;p|LEOTEC~1.PIF
Invalid program file name, please check your pif file. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

The machine I used to use for Leo has Win 3.1 so I think you're on the right track. The .pif file is 995 bytes so I could post it here if that would help. Leo.exe is only 307,217 bytes so I could also easily show it. There are, however, several auxiliary .exe files.

I forgot in my original post to describe my system. I guess maybe that is no longer a requirement, but here it is: Acer Aspire 1 netbook, N450 Atom at 1.66 gh, 1.99 GB RAM, 160 GB HD. Windows XP Home Version 2002, SP 3. Thanks.
