--- problem solved ---

I'm currently trying to run the game "Der Planer 1" with dosbox - without success.

As soon as I start the program, an error message occurs stating, that there are not enough files, and that I will have to add "files=30" to the config.sys file.

In the beginning I used Dosbox 0.74 without any modifications, than I switched to a build from http://ykhwong.x-y.net/xe/dosbox_data/143. In this build the file setting could be adjusted via the dosbox.conf. I inreased the file setting to 254 and tried to start the game, but failed.

As requested follows further necessary information:
Motherboard: Intel® PM45 + ICH9M

Processor type and speed: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T5750 2,0 GHz 667 MHz FSB 2 MB Cache

Amount and type of RAM:4096 MB, PC2-5300 (800 MHz), DDR2 SODIMM

Video board w/ RAM amount and type: NVIDIA® GeForce® 9200M GS 512 MB RAM

Sound board: Intel HD Audio Codec, REALTEK ALC262-VC2-GR

Operating system: windows vista home premium SP2

Game name (and version, if applicable) Der Planer 1, donloaded from http://www.kostenlosespiele.org/Der-Planer-1.html

Description of problem: as above

Reproducibility of problem (always, only once, always but only on a specific level, etc.): always

Sound mode used: no idea, default dosbox 0.74 settings

Video mode (Software, OpenGL, Direct3D, or Glide, and resolution): no idea, default dosbox 0.74 settings

Version of emulator (for VDMSound, probably 2.0.4 or 2.1.0; for DOSBox, 0.58+): Dosbox 0.74 from dosbox.com; dosbox SVN 0.74 (7.5.2011) from http://ykhwong.x-y.net/xe/dosbox_data/143

I've set files=30 as suggested, but still the same error occurs.

As far as I understand, the files setting describes how many files DOS can handle in parallel. This was the reason, why I tried to increase the number from the default 127 to 253.

I'm absolutely no expert in this field (as you can guess from my postings) but as increasing the file number (or setting it to 30 as requested) doesn't help I would guess, that some game file just messes up the number of simultaneously handled files...

You could try putting a config.sys file in the folder you mount as c and enter files=30 in it. Who knows... 😉

And have you tried loadfix? (see the readme)

Other than that I expect someone with a debug dosbox needs to look there.

The linked copy is a CD-rip, probably warez, and this forum does not support either. That said, it does work in DOSBox with correct mounts; and I'm sure it would work with no problem at all if properly installed from an original CD.

the game was released into public domain in the year 2001. To my best knowledge, it's now available as freeware. Just to make clear, that I'm not trying to do something illegal here.

It may well be, that the downloaded software is a CD-rip. But this is the way it was released into PD by Greenwood Entertainment. I receive exactly the same error message if I try to run the game from other reliable sources such as http://www.chip.de/downloads/Der-Planer-1_13000981.html (The domain is registered to a reknowned german PC magazine, which probably won't distribute copyright protected material without proper permission)

That sounds reasonable. So install with correct mounts and you are set 😉
Maybe try to follow the 60 seconds guide

ok, problem solved.

Indeed I messed up with the correct mounting. There's a subdirectory which obviously needed to be mounted as CD-rom.

Correct would be something like this:

MOUNT C "...\derplaner"
MOUNT D "...\derplaner\derplanercd" -t cdrom

Thanks to you all for your help!
