GeFORCE2 mx 440

Yes, that would be the one =)
IBM Compatible with 486 processor
(50 mhz minimum recommended)
Double speed CD ROM
VGA Card with 512 k mem, VESA compatible or VESA driver installed.
10 mb HDD space
Sound card (uses HMI sound drivers, eh? 😮)
6.5Mb free extended memory (XMS)
Mouse
"Supports" Windows 95.

...and to think this was "innovative" in 1996 😁

at any rate, I cannot get it running in XP with abandon loader and VDM sound loaded, and on my 450 mhz HP (that I keep around with win 98 just for this reason, because I love a lot of the older win 95 / DOS games, Hell, BloodNet, Phantasmagoria to name a few 😀) the video is messed up, but I found a patch so I will try that, but it crashed out of the first scene at the murder site with some lpl library not found error or something and a dos prompt C:\RIPPER>.... bah, maybe I'll just lump it 🙁
Any ideas let me know, thanks!

Yep, sounds like another "Dos title that works WINDOWS 95" title.

Suggest you keep this setup or a Dual-Boot for quite some time to come. Progress is being made, but there's a long way to go before you can consistently run your old titles on the NT-based OS's. I can barely get "Blood" to run under XP with all the settings cranked down. So I leave it on my Win98 partition, where I can run it at high-resolution with all the settings maxed. Right now, it's just not worth the effort to run it on XP.

Sounds like it wants a library file that's different (or no longer there) under XP. If you can find the exact name of the file, search your Win98 PC for it and try copying it to the game directory on the XP machine.

Those errors are on the Windows 98 machine...
I haven't applied the patch though yet, I will let you know.
This site is truly a godsend for those of us 'retro' PC gamers!

Many thanks to all of you who have helped me thus far...
I'll let you know if the patch helps..
I look forward to the day someone comes out with a front end or something that will run these games....I mean there is DOSbox, but I could never get it to run, and there's abandon loader with VDM sound, but not all games will run. This is understandable though, for obvious reasons....thousands of configurations, blah blah blah 😀
P.S. I can see you're a blood fan, isn't that caleb? Yeah, great game also, yet another reason I keep my old "retro" comp.

Yes, it’s my fault.

I actually have this game and XP. But right now, I have no clue where it is. When (if) I ever find it, I'll be sure to test it.

DOWNGRADE??!!! I've got tech doc's stating right here that MS dropped the "Pro" theme in XP because Corporate types like the "Luna" theme more...and we all know how much corporate types actually use the "Pro" os for "Pro" work. 😠 Pissed me off when I read that crap and verified my opinion that 2K Pro is more Pro than XP Pro. The README To the patch for Ripper (http://www.talonsoft.com/patches/take2/ripper.html) gives some clues:

Changes from Ripper v1.03 to Ripper v1.05: [July 30 1996] […]
Show full quote

Changes from Ripper v1.03 to Ripper v1.05: [July 30 1996]

- Added a workaround for a buggy CD-ROM driver (from Mitsumi) that mostly
affected Compaq Presario and Hewlett Packard computers with S3 Trio
video chipsets (this has nothing to do with the video card or chipset).

- Added command line option to select your Ripper. To use, type one of:

RIPPER /1
RIPPER /2
RIPPER /3
RIPPER /4

to start the game and use a particular Ripper. This can be combined with
other command line options (i.e., RIPPER /1 /V3).

Changes from Ripper v1.02 to Ripper v1.03: [March 29 1996]

- Added command line options to INSTALL, SETUP, and RIPPER to disable
support for Vesa 2.0, disable use of protected mode bank switching code,
or both. Use /V1, /V2, or /V3 (respectively) to disable these features.
Example:
RIPPER /V3
This will run Ripper, disabling support for both Vesa 2.0 and protected
mode bank switching code.

You can still use the /V option to force Ripper to run in 480 line mode.

If you experience black screens or apparent lock ups, try this:
RIPPER /V /V3

- RIPPER now prints out the error number that DOS reports when it gets
a CD read error. This should help Take 2's technical support staff to
diagnose the problem.

Changes from Ripper v1.01A to Ripper v1.02: [March 16, 1996]

- Fixed restore game problem where it would delete the contents of the
W.A.C. notebook.

- Corrected problem that could cause graphic glitches behind the mouse
cursor on Tseng video chips.

Changes from Ripper v1.01 to Ripper v1.01A: [March 11, 1996]

Changes from Ripper v1.0 to Ripper v1.01: [March 8, 1996]

- Prints the version number when you quit the game.

- Fixed problems relating to Vesa 2.0 drivers. This, in particular, caused
various display problems for different parts of the game on the Matrox
Millenia video card.

- Fix various problems relating to bad values in C:\TAKE2.INI and
RIPPER.INI.

- Exit gracefully if there isn't a CD in the CD-ROM drive when you start
the game.

- Fixed several problems with the WAC Notebook.

- Implemented ripper choice cycling. This will guarantee a different
ripper each time you start a game until all 4 possible Rippers have been
selected. Then it resets and randomly selects the next one (for the 5th
new game). To have it randomly choose from all 4 suspects, delete the
SETTINGS.DEF file.

Be sure that you do. His problem's quite mystifying.

All this rage over a theme. Themes are like TV channels. Don't like it, change it.
