I think that ATI is not bad - some mid-class. It should have VBE 2.0, AFAIK VBE 3.0 implemented only nVidia. You can try my program VESAtest that will also measure data transfer rate from RAM to LFB
http://rayer.ic.cz/programm/programe.htm#VESATEST
Thanks, these are the results on the Ati card, I don't know how it compares to other cards:

Bank switching is always slow. Tne compare results to your S3 card on same PC. The transfer rate is also determined by CPU and memory speed. On my C2D with PCI-E nvidia 7900GT I got 2900MB/s in LFB mode 😀

wrote:BTW what version of VBE has this ET6000? VBE 2.0?
ET6000 and 6100 support VBE 2.0.
What about a Voodoo 3 or Banshee? These have VBE 3.0 and Glide support, and cost about as much as a pack of cigarettes.
By the way, RIVA 128/TNT/2 Windows 3.1 drivers do not work with Geforce 2 MX 🙁
I am aroused about any X86 motherboard that has full functional ISA slot. I think i have problem. Not really into that original (Turbo) XT,286,386 and CGA/EGA stuff. So just a DOS nut.
PS. If I upload RAR, it is a 16-bit DOS RAR Version 2.50.

But is it worth sacrificing some old DOS games?
I change my vote for Riva128(zx) either pci or agp... awesome and compatible vga cards for dos with VBE3.0 support... haven't found a problematic title yet on the vga/ega games I tried...

Which games are you talking about? So far I haven't encountered any that a Voodoo3 couldn't handle.

I've had stuttering in Commander Keen Goodbye Galaxy (Compatibility/SVGA options can't fix it) and a scrambled screen in Hard Drivin' II.
VBE 2.0 imortant for 640x400 and higher resolutions (in DOS).
I have run DOS game on cards with VBE 2.0 in 1280x1024 resolution.
I don't know what can do more the VBE 3.0...
I have made some tests for Commander Keen 4;5;6 on AGP and PCI video cards:
Works without error (also with most DOS games):
Cirrus Logic cards; Trident 3Dimage cards (975x; 985x); nVidia cards after TNT2; S3 cards (except Savage3D).
Some other cards have no problems with Commander Keen 4;5;6 but have problems other DOS games:
nVidia cards up to TNT2; Rendition Vérité 1000; SiS 315 Pro; Trident 9440
Have scroll or color errors with Commander Keen 4;5;6:
Ati cards; 3Dfx cards; Alliance cards (most of the Voodoo Rush cards are also use this chip fot 2D); Matrox cards; Tseng cards; 3Dlabs cards; Intel i740; PowerVR Kyro II; S3 Savage3D; Trident Blade 3D; Number Nine Ticket to Ride IV.
@Gona:
what errors you spotted with a riva128? I've been using one for some time now and did not notice any problems...
Riva128 and TNT in DOS compatibility are amost the same as TNT2 and laters but I have found a game "Boulderoid" version 1.12:
http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/boulderoid
that cannot start on Riva128; TNT (and 3Dlabs Permedia 2).
The error message is:
"graphics mode too big".
But maybe it is a video BIOS depending bug because now I have found a TNT2 Ultra by Diamod with same problem, but the ASUS TNT2 Ultra have no this problem.
I have got this error message all of my Riva128 cards:
Diamond Viper V330 AGP;
Diamond Viper V330 PCI;
Asus 3D Explorer V3000 PCI.
and on most of my TNT cards:
Diamond Viper V550 (TNT)
nVIDIA OEM TNT2
Diamond Viper V770 (TNT2 Ultra)
but none of my
Asus V3800 (TNT2 Ultra);
TNT2 M64;
and all later nVidia card.
interesting, I'll check it on my Creative Labs and OEM riva128zx cards...
OK. I'm curious what is the result.
I just checked, Bouldernoid runs on my Creative Labs 128zx AGP card.... but it has some weird scrolling bug I think...
It is interesting.
I have tested a normal (non ultra) TNT2 and it also got
"graphics mode too big" error message.
This card is nVIDIA OEM (for Compaq).
What is youd Boulderoid version?
My is "v1.12" (1994.Jun.30). Here it is:
http://193.166.3.2/pub/msdos/games/arcade/bould112.zip
Now I have downloaded the last one Boulderoid v1.15 and it is run on Riva128 also. I cant see weird scrolling bug.
But v1.12 is more interesting for me. 😀
(I'm going to make a compatibility page)
Do you have other Riva128; TNT; TNT2 card for testing?
yep, got 128,128zx,tnt,tnt2 ... will test with 1.12 and report
