that's the message i now get on bootup, when loading a soundfont for dos before 98 loads. I think I have changed something and cannot get it to go right. It's says it tries to reconfigure, cant, then reconfigures all isa cards, and tells: "the [pnp] synth needs resources!".

It does load the firmware now. i forget - is it supposed to do that every boot? i thought it just loaded the soundfont file previously.

once I'm in 98, the card works. I have exited to dos and used ews64cfg, removed the devices in 98 and let windows redetect, reinstalled asio drivers, removed devices again, etc.

any ideas?

no conflicts in device manager. using 2 irq's, one for the synth [well, it gets used for sb pro emulation anyway] and one for midi-1. midi-2, a db50xg, i left without an irq.

i tried reserving the irq's and dma's in bios, with or without pnp os. and also tried it with resources done automatically.

[this mess was possibly caused by inadvertently reconfiguring the card when trying to use it elsewhere].

system is:

k6/3 450 in ga5ax, 256mb ram
ews64xl with db50xg

could anyone who has one of these cards advise please?

The message with reconfiguration appears most likely always and is nothing to worry about.

The way to go is:
Make a plan, how the individual hardware parts of the card should be configured, i.e. which resources you want to have for each. Make sure those resources are most likely unused. Reserving resources already in BIOS makes somehow no sense for this case.

Boot up with F5, and run the eeprom tool and set your desired resources. Switch off Power and On again.

Run ewsinit with loading firmware and verbose to see if it gets configured to those resources.
(b and v)
You have to load firmware at least once after reboot.

Since W98 does all the PnP detection again, you might end up with a different configuration compared to plain DOS.

I think we had already an extensive thread about Maxi Sound 64 and EWS64, where the Mute Bug has been solved and CptKltz presented a good mixer setting with enabled effects...

This is my output:
ewsinit.png

Commandlines:
c:\ews64\ewsinit -f -v -b gs_10mb.94b -m mixer.ttm
c:\ews64\fmon
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T4
c:\ews64\cs32mix /M=15,15 /W=13,13 /L=0,0 /X=1 /F=15,15 /C=11,11 /I=L

make sure ews64_os.bin is in the same folder as ewsinit.exe

In the same PC is a GUS at 240,7,7,7,7

I found the Thread with CptKlotz settings for the Mixer file:
