Paul and I have been over this before. IIRC, D1_3dfx is not only a patch for Glide support, it also patches the game to run in Win9x/NT4. So it's a Glide-in-Win9x/NT4 patch, and falls out of the scope of GliDOS. That doesn't mean you can't put GLIDOS's OpenGlide in the directory and see what happens. 😀
Supposedly, the author of D1_3dfx (Stefan Wiegand) lost interest in development, and has not released the source. He also supposedly developed a D1_opengl patch. 😀
*edit* Here's my note from Paul:
* Descent 1 The people that did the 3dfx version ported it to Windows
at the same time, so as far as I know there is no DOS 3dfx version. It
may work with OpenGlide or evoodoo.

I got it to work with GliDOS, but it runs in a tiny window and you only get to see about 3/4 of the screen.
But it is accelerated, and it is fast.

Today is the first time I tried out Descent 1 x. Works pretty good too.
I downloaded Descent 1 X v1.43 (OGL support) from here: http://www.planetdescent.com/site/files/d1/patches/
and tried it out on my Descent 1 in Windows XP. It uses your video card's OGL ICD to render and shows the OGL ICD extensions in another window.
Supports resolutions from the lowest all the way up to 1024X768 and they all work! Unfortunately whenever I enable fullscreen the game doesn't work. 🙁 Still the Windows OGL ver looks and plays considerably better than the DOS ver. Woohoo! Gonna go play some D1 now!
Yes D1X is superb, and good job it does because, as Stiletto said, D1_3dfx isn't a Glidos type of game.
People are working to improve D2X also, so it may be a better option than Glidos for D2 in the future.
D1X works fullscreen for me. I think I have to specify arguments in the short-cut to do it.
Make a file in your Descent directory called
d1x.ini
and add
-gl_voodoo
That should force it to fullscreen.
This is what my ini file looks like
-pps 6
-shortpackets
-noredundancy
-playermessages
-cockpit 2
-msgcolorlevel 3
-GL_MIPMAP
-nocdaudio
-gl_voodoo
-gl_stdtexmerge
-gl_alttexmerge
-gl_texminfilt GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR
This seems to look the best at 1024x768, and looks better than the glide patch.
Now if there were patches like this, then we could all forget glide and use OpenGL.

I remember getting Descent 1 on a bundle of floppy disks (like 5-10 of them) and marveling at the glorious 320x240 8-bit graphics! You people expect too much from these games. Jeese. 😉
Of course, I've got Descent 3 now. Nyeah. (Came with my video card..or..something...)
Yes, it’s my fault.
d1x143_oglmw -1600X1200 -fullscreen
This is just soooo wrong on so many levels...
Now to try out 4x AA!

Wouldn't it be better to give us a 600x480 "crop" of the larger image?
You really want to keep the resolution in multiples of 320x240 (Descents original res), So 1280x960 would look best as none of the ships look slightly deformed.
It does look great though with detonator 40.41, 64tap aniso, and 4x FSAA.
It's a damn shame they cancelled Descent 4 😠

Hi Craig. Check your private messages.
Ok, here is a glide version running under gliDOS

Wow! How did you do that? Is that just the Glide2x.dll file like
with RB? I never thought to try this. Well, I didn't until recently have a full version of D1.
I'm not sure if it uses the Glide2x.dll, but it works via your front-end.
here are the settings I used
Name: Descent I
Executable: D:\Descent2\D1_3dfx.exe
ControlJudderFix: 1
Resolution: 2
FullScreen: No
It could be that the exe file is one of those files that is windows based, but uses dos to run itself.
I have seen a few like this.

That's weird. Is there a copy of Glide2x.dll (not .ovl) in your
Descent2 folder. If so what happens if you remove it?
Does the selection of resolution in the Glidos server affect
the size of window you see? I notice the Window says Descent
at the top. I think that's unusual; doesn't it usually say "Glide server"?
Interesting.
It's not Descent 2, but Descent 1.
This is what I think it is.
The main 3dfx exe isn't a true windows exe file, but is an exe file that was written to run in windows, nothing else.
I expect I'm wrong though.
But this version totally ignores any hardware that is present in windows.
i.e. Mouse, Joystick, etc..
I can only use keys, I can't assign anything to my joystick or mouse. Which says to me that the patch is looking for a DOS mouse or a standard DOS type joystick.
But don't quote me on that, I could be wrong 😜

I realised its D1. I said D2 folder, only because you quoted that as the path.
About the mouse and joystick. Glidos's mouse support works only when Glidos is in fullscreen mode. VDMSound should provide Joystick support.
Did you try any of the little test, I mentioned?
Nope, it didn't change the res in glidos.
It runs the dos prompt, then runs the game (which is in a tiny window). You then have to keep pressing the enter key until you start a game, then just drag the window out by hand and you can see the game.
If you drag the window out too soon, it crashes back to the desktop.
