i recently resurrected my old pentium with an nvidia vanta on it.i reinstalled windows me from scratch, everythign works fine..except those games that require vesa driver, like STORM or balls of steel.the driver that i installed was from windows me cd,not the original cd driver.so i was wondering if there's a generic vesa driver or do i have to install the driver for the nvidia vanta...which unfortunately i can't find anywhere on the net

I've found that Vanta isn't supported by NV reference drivers. You usually need to get drivers from one of the computer builders or card makers that used it. Or mod the INF of a NVIDIA driver that has TNT2 support with the Vanta device id.

I think Vanta may have come in both NV5 and NV6 incarnations. This shouldn't affect drivers though.
