Okay, I'm trying to run the CD version of Arena on Windows 3.1 using Dosbox. I've ironed out all the problems except that MSCDEX isn't loading.

I'm at my wits end here. I have several other games from GoG.com that require loading the game from the hard disk, with the CD in the drive (Privateer for example), and would like to be able to play these.

In case it helps, this is a mobile version for Android (Andosbox) developed by Locnet- I've noticed that without windows 3.1 everything works fine. I am trying to get this working as a pet project, however, since I would love to have a fully working GUI for my dos games.

Try to get it working with an official version of dosbox on windows, os x or linux. If it works there you need to contact the author of that android version.

There are other DOS guis out there besides Win3.x, you know. QuickMenu III is supposed to be quite good, from what I've heard, and it's more lightweight than Win3.x

You mean The Elder Scrolls? Are you sure that it was able to run under Windows 3.1 on real hardware? (Almost every complex DOS game back then included instructions recommending that you exit Windows before trying to run the game.)

What commands are you using to mount the CD image (assuming you're mounting a CD image) ?

Oh, if you are using windows 3.x as launcher for dos games... Don't do that. The command prompt in Windows 3.x is not the same as pure dos prompt afaik

Alright, following Dominus's advice, I switched from Win3.1 to Necromancer's Dos Navigator. This fixed the problems, so I'm assuming it was something to do with drivers (The bane of windows existence)
