I have just installed DOSBOX but find I cannot interrupt an out-of-control program with ctrl/c as I can with "proper" DOS. Is there some way to remedy this?

DOSBox is designed for games.
To simply exit the program you run (and dosbox as well) press ctrl-f9.

The workaround for this is to boot an image of an actual DOS version in DOSBox.
