What's with the video cards? I have a few TNT2 cards and I find the VGA signal quality quite poor.

I just found a guy that's going to sell me an ATi Rage IIc for $5. From what I can tell, this is the last (or second last?) Rage card that supports CIF, is that right?

No, the Ati Rage Pro also supports it, and if you've seen my videos the increase in performance is significant compared to the Rage II (and Rage IIc, though that is a bit better, somewhere inbetween Rage II and Rage Pro). So it is the second last card to support it, but I am actually unsure if it was released after or just before the Pro card.

What is CIF? Is that ATi's proprietary API?

Yes 😀 There is a bulleted post of supported CIF games in the marvin section incase anyone is wondering.

So a Rage 128 doesn't support ATi's own API?

It doesn't. CIF was considered obsolete when the Rage 128 came to the marked.

Bought this boxed 2meg isa STB Nitro 64 a few weeks ago for $30 delivered to Australia, Bargain! I already had Diamond speedstar 64 with the same chipset but for the price I could afford to have a spare 😀 .

Interestingly I read in the manual about wait states, I thought this generally only applied to VLB devices?

"This jumper provides a way for the microprocessor to perform write operations directly to the video memory on the NITRO 64 without the typical two wait-state delay imposed for video write operations.
A zero wait state-option allows fast peripheral devices, like the NITRO 64, to perform at an optimal level, thus increasing overall systems performance.
When the zero wait-state jumper is OFF the microprocessor imposes the standard two wait-state for write operations.

Either way im going to test this card in a new 386 Build with the wait state jumpers my feeling is that it wont make a difference to dos benchmarks.

I have tried the 0 wait state jumpers on 2 isa vgas on my 386DX build and IBM386sx machines... enabling 0ws only leads to crashes on my computers, sure vga is faster but sacrificing stability is a deal breaker.

Nice gear! I'm wondering if that PCI controller is bootable. I purchased a Silicon Image RAID SATA controller and was hoping it worked in my machines for booting, but no luck 🙁

I believe you can boot a HD attached to the controller by changing the BIOS to boot from a SCSI device. I will find out!

A friend of mine had bought a PCI SATA-USB 2.0 combo card, and told me that it doesn't boot from it. He was so certain about that, and when I told him I ordered a SATA PCI card insisted that it won't boot. Finally my card arrived, and not only the disk I connected to it was bootable, but it was visible on dos 6.22. The chip on the card is a Silicon Image 3114, and I'm sure it has it's own bios, that's why it's bootable.

Here is the SI 3114 card, 14 dollars shipped worldwide new:

Do not buy the VIA S-ATA card. I just got it and you can't boot from it. Seems to have issues with the Win98 drivers as well.

There is one company that still makes them and their main customer is the government because a lot of government departments still run on old tech.

http://athana.com/

They also still make 8" floppies, tape backup cartridges, and tape on reels.
