VOGONS

In response to innumerable help requests with insufficient information, I've created this list of guidelines to ease the process of tracking down and resolving problems.

The following are things that should be in your help request:
* Motherboard

Intel Easton2T (D815EEA2)

* Processor type and speed

Intel Pentium III (Tualatin) 1.13GHz

* Amount and type of RAM

2 sticks each of 256K PC133 SDRAM

* Video board w/ RAM amount and type

Intel Solano 82815E GMCH

* Sound board

Intel ICH2

* Operating system

Microsoft Windows XP Pro

* Game name (and version, if applicable)

Eidos Platinum Collection Tomb Raider Gold (this is the one w/ all of TR1 + the bonus levels).

* Description of problem (be detailed: saying "it's jerky" doesn't help, saying "the player sprites seem to be jerky when I'm pressing any of the arrow keys" does)

Program hangs w/ white screen. A Glidos window titled "Error" pops up and says, "SetPixelFormat() failed: Cannot set format specified."

* Reproducibility of problem (always, only once, always but only on a specific level, etc.)

Happens ~20% of the time when I load a saved game. Happens consistently when I exit the Natla's Mines level. My level stats appear, then I press ENTER, and instead of the FMV, it errors. Sometimes it will play a little of the animation, then show the error.

* Sound mode used

Soundblaster, 220, 1, 5.

* Video mode (Software, OpenGL, Direct3D, or Glide, and resolution)

Glidos. Errors in either fullscreen or windowed mode (but I couldn't read the error msg in fullscreen). 640x480.

* Version of emulator (for VDMSound, probably 2.0.4 or 2.1.0; for DOSBox, 0.58+)

VDMSound 2.1.0. Glidos 1.25.

* Steps already attempted to solve the problem (please say you've read the README if you haven't, and READ IT IF YOU HAVEN'T!)

I've read the README. I re-installed everything. I am running w/ VESASupport = No, and with the old glide2x.dll from Red Baron.
Somehow I managed to get it work ONCE, so I saved the game, and I've been able to play the Atlantis level (well, I started it at least). When I tried going back to the previous savegame to see if the problem re-occurred, it did re-occur. The problem seems to happen right before the CDROM spins up.

Thanks in advance for the help!

-Jeff

Whoops, forgot one other tidbit: when I close the SetPixelFormat() error window, I get another window titled "Glidos" that says, "Read failure".

Thx,

Try changing you desktop color depth. Make sure you try High Color and True Color.

OK, now I'm frustrated. Intermittent bugs are the hardest to fix. I tried various resolutions w/ high color and true color. Oddly enough, most of the time I did NOT get the SetPixelFormat error. Instead, I finished Natla's Mines, the animation showed, then the game hung at the beginning of Atlantis. Odd thing, the hang is looking DOWN on Laura from behind, and she has weapons drawn. The background music (heartbeat) keeps playing from the CD even after I kill the Glidos process and ntdvm.

I finally got the SetPixelFormat error when I was at 1024x768 True Color, and I upped the refresh from 60Hz to 75Hz. Aha? No, when I tried it again, it hung as described above (no SetPixelFormat). Then I set it back to 60Hz, and it gave me the SetPixelFormat error (even though it didn't do so 2 minutes before)!!

Any other hints or things that I should try?? Is there any other info I can provide?

Thanks,

-Jeff

To be honest, assuming that the video chip that I've never heard of is built into the motherboard, then you are pretty lucky it works at all. You could see if you can find more recent drivers for it, or maybe consider getting a separate card.

Do you know if you run any other 3D games that require OpenGL?

Sigh. It's too bad that you've never heard of Intel Extreme graphics. While we are not at the leading edge of performance, Intel is the largest provider of 3D graphics accelerators in the world (as measured by number of units shipped) by a wide margin.

To be fair, the 815 is a Pentium-III (TM) generation graphics chipset, so it wouldn't hurt for me to upgrade.

Thanks for trying anyway.

Well, time you fixed your OpenGL implementation then, isn't it. 😉

ROFLMAO!!! 😁 😁 😁

I've heard of it!

You seriously work for Intel? Hate to tell you, Intel has a lousy reputation for OpenGL performance when compared to other video chipset manufacturers - even when compared to other chipsets from more or less the same release/mfg. date. If given an option between Direct3D and OpenGL with the same game/program on an Intel chipset, I ALWAYS choose Direct3D.

And so - the correct solution here is to ditch OpenGlide as the Glide wrapper. You will get better performance AND compatibility from Direct3D.

One-and-a-half options:
eVoodoo + GliDOS should get acceptable behavior, although our hands would be tied if you found graphics glitches.

Download, unzip, and place in GliDOS directory where glide2x.dll is located. Results may vary (see: Re: Zeckensack's Glide Wrapper )

Or, try dgVoodoo and stop using GliDOS. Unfortunately, it only will wrap DOS games in Win9x/ME - so far. Maybe the next version, when the author gets back from army duty, will it wrap DOS games in WinXP.

Finally, you *could* try a different Glide->OpenGL wrapper with GliDOS. One of the other best out there is Zeckensack's.

Let us know how you make out. Note that the only solution we'll REALLY support is GliDOS with OpenGlide.

[EDIT] OR.... get a new graphics card!!!

Good suggestion... though, I can't remember which versions of eVoodoo work with Glidos. I downloaded one and it was really very close, but crashed when you went into the ring menu because there was no LFB support in evoodoo at the time. Recently I downloaded a version and it wouldn't work at all.
