Ah yes! An excellent one-on-one fighting with many deep "strategy" and with numerous hidden secrets to unlock and experience. Can also be called an RPG-fighter, since there is opportunity to develop the stats of the pilots and the ability to salvage fallen opponent's parts from previous battle and use it in future battles.

I was obsesssed with using Katana.

I still have the printed copy of the gamefaq with me. Feel like want to play it again now.

I have been playing it while testing my hardware. It's a fantastic game in my opinion.

Whenever I'm tired and bored and don't expect to be in bed for a couple hours, I load up OMF2097, start a new tournament character on the highest difficulty setting, and see how far I can get without losing a match. Last time I did this, I won every match I was faced with, beat every challenger, and cleared all four tournaments. :3

OMF2097 is one of a very tiny handful of games I can call myself a master at. :)

The sequel though... I just have one expression for that one:

Agreed with everything replied above! 😀

BTW, if anyone is so inclined, some stuff for OMF2097 -> http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/sno … /weeds/OMF2097/ , and the obligatory retro 90's fan web page 🤣 -> http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/sno … t_Fall_2097.htm .

Anyhow, man... the insane amount of money that I spent in long-distance telephone charges playing on Epic MegaGames' "Challenge Arena" for OMF2097 🤣! I used to have a blast playing online back then, and could even kick some of the youngsters' butts in the arena.

Hehe, I remember in the main arena chat room (after kicking said youngsters' butts):

Them: "How old are you?"

Me (at the time): "34."

Them: "CRAP, YOU PLAY GOOD!"

🤣! 😀

P.S. Some of us should get together sometime a try a DOSBox IPX network sort of thing over the Internet, and play some OMF2097 😀 Hehe... I still have (and use) my original old and aging Gravis gamepads 😀

(EDIT) P.P.S. I don't suppose anyone would have a copy of that BBS arena server software that Epic MegaGames had mentioned in the game's readme? I'm sure that I/we couldn't run it on today's PCs, but it would be really neat to have a copy of that software stored away in my retro OMF2097 archives 😀

Are you sure about that? If so can you explain how this works.

Proof of concept 😀

Re: "ipx=true", "IPXNET STARTSERVER 213" (for the DOSBox IPX Tunneling Server), and "IPXNET CONNECT 127.0.0.1 213" (for the DOSBox IPX Tunneling Client).

Note that running two copies of DOSBox and OMF2097 is fairly sluggish on my old aging Intel P4 2.666GHz CPU <grin>.

It was quite a while back since I last played it compulsively, and I needed to refer back to the gamefaq to let you know the specifics :

I'll just paste the abridged summary here :

UNRANKED CHALLENGERS
------------------------------

If you've played tournament mode, you've probably met an "unranked challenger" or two and wondered how to get the rest.......[x]........

.....[x].......Most unranked challengers have "enhancements" for their robots, giving them
special powers such as extra projectiles, faster moves, etc. If you're in
the same robot and you destroy that challenger, you'll get the enhancement
for yourself.......[x].........

......[x]........As you destroy those unranked challengers, you'll get a message from your technician saying he's installing an enhancement. An enhancement lasts until you sell your robot. Katana and Shadow have three enhancements each, Chronos has one, Nova has none, and all other robots have two. .......[x]..........

@rfnagel : How about hamachi? Have you tried it? I used to play Duke Nukem 3D using hamachi to set up the IPX game with my friend. Works well.

Also, have you tried the hidden difficulty levels? Again, I recalled this by looking back at the gamefaqs :

DEADLY - from World Champion difficulty level (the highest by default, without the secrets), keep hitting the right key 22 times.

ULTIMATE - press O+M+F for a second and release. Then again press once more the right key to select the highest difficulty level. 😉

rfnagel I do not know what to say, but in some ways I am tempted to ask. If you play Diablo II with the expansion. Cause I think it could be fun playing online with you. On battlenet Europe.

OMF2097 was designed with its strategy guide in mind, which is why so many of the features are hidden away. There's also some extra options you can find and enable (I forget how at the moment), one of which is called "Rehit Mode" or something along those lines which allows you to hit an opponent that's about to fall down provided your attack doesn't match your last attack. This mode REALLY changes the nature of the game, allowing for some epic combos! (Not quite as insane as KI's but still...)

Also, the highest skill level in Tournament Mode is equal in difficulty to Ultimate skill from the story mode. ;)

I've never used Hamachi, but I'll have to give it a try 😀

I ALWAYS played using the "Utimate" difficulty level, and IIRC, that was the difficulty level that I used when recording the following demos 😀

http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/sno … 97/WeedsTrn.zip

BTW, historical tidbit (tooting my own horn here):

*I* was the one who first discovered the demo recording and playback feature (and how to use it) when it was first added to the game (with one of the updates, after the initial game shipped):

Like I said, simply tooting my own horn 🤣!

I have the first Diablo (and an expansion pack for it, but I forget the name), but not the second one. That being said, I never care for Diablo that much (just my humble personal opinion, as I know that a lot of folks like Diablo).

Anyhow, since you mentioned Battlenet, I'm still sometimes on U.S. East (and occasionally, U.S. West) playing StarCraft Brood War (or regular StarCraft) 😀

P.S. My Battle.net user ID is RichNagel (and occasionally, RFNagel).

It's always fun when you find something in a game that no one else seems to know about. I myself was the first one to ever post anything on the internet about the little tune you can hear at the end of Star Fox if you let it sit on the "The End" screen for a few minutes, as I accidentally discovered that myself roughly 20 years ago when I was still a kid. :)

rfnagel: I do not play Starcraft but the expansion to Diablo 1 is called Diablo Hellfire. And I only played it offline, back in the day.

I recently downloaded the freeware release of OMF and I tried getting it running in DosBox with the cycles set to max, but it runs WAY TOO FAST. 😳 How many cycles would you recommend setting for this game? I was thinking 20000 myself.

Hehe, on my old aging Intel P4 2.666GHz CPU I myself don't have that problem 🤣... "cycles=max" works perfectly 😀

That being said, you might try setting "cycles=20000", start the game, and then ALT+ENTER to switch DOSBox into windowed mode.

Then simply press CTRL+F11/CTRL+F12 to decrease and increase DOSBox's cycles, and make a note how the game is running. After pressing those keys, you can see in DOSBox's titlebar what the cycles are being switched to, and then determine a value where the game runs well 😀

There is a speed limiter in this game, in the gameplay menu. The game is working perfectly with cycles=max.

Asus P4P800 SE/Pentium4 3.2E/2 Gb DDR400B,
Radeon HD3850 Agp (Sapphire), Catalyst 14.4 (XpProSp3).
Voodoo2 12 MB SLI, Win2k drivers 1.02.00 (XpProSp3).

Well, I found that the game is still too fast at 20000 cycles, but works pretty well once lowered to around 10600 cycles. There is some occasional slowdown, but it only happens for about a second at a time when it does, and other than that the game runs at an excellently-playable speed. 😁

It will run smoothly with the speed option turned all the way down, left to a single increment bar.

The internal speed control is quite good.

My dosbox runs at auto settings, and I needed to slow down the speed as mentioned above. That's the speed I'm comfortable with.

I think it will run smooth even in actual PII or even PIII machines, when the internal game speed is turned down.
