I'm wondering, do 3D engines like the Doom and Build (Duke3D) engines benefit from a 3D accelerator? Or is their performance CPU dependent?

It's a simple question but I can't seem to find the answer. 🤐

No. They're not using any accelerated 3D API. Their performance is CPU dependent (unless you have a slow VGA).

If you want these games with 3D acceleration look out for source ports with GL renderers.

Well, there are 2 Build engine games with a glideAPI support: Blood and Shadow Warrior. But the only difference is - bilinear filtering.

Asus P4P800 SE/Pentium4 3.2E/2 Gb DDR400B,
Radeon HD3850 Agp (Sapphire), Catalyst 14.4 (XpProSp3).
Voodoo2 12 MB SLI, Win2k drivers 1.02.00 (XpProSp3).

Sector-based games choke on a 3d card because of the high amount of polygons needed to recreate the lighting of the scene.

About half of first 3d accelerators didn't have even that 😉 And telling the truth, do you need more? 😉
