Greetings!
Long time lurker here needing some extra brain cells to solve a problem if anyone's willing to lend them.
I have a 286/16 0ws on a Headland HT12 motherboard with 4mb ram.
Its running ms dos 5 and windows 3.1 on it from a clean install of original disks.
The problem I have is that I cannot seem to use any of the SVGA modes in windows other than 800x600 in 16 colours using the built in MS generic svga drivers. Nor the win3.1 drivers for the three video cards I have.
The video cards in question are three cirrus isa cards each having 1mb vram on that work fine on my 386dx in svga. The chips are a cl-gd5424 a 26 and a 29.
I can use the CLmode utility in dos on all three cards and test 800x600 and 1024x768 modes in 256/64k colours quite happily just no joy in windows.
With the ms svga drivers you type win, it displays the windows 3.1 splash screen and then just drops to dos again. With the cirrus drivers it just hangs on the splash screen.
I'm wondering if the ms and cirrus svga drivers all use 386 instructions. I don't have any other old cards around e.g. oak or trident to test so I'm out of ideas now.
Does anyone have a 286 running 3.1 in svga okay or thoughts and solutions?
Thanks in advance
