I've said it in a few threads here: I don't consider VSC a fully accurate replacement for the real hardware. Many samples that I've heard from it have some loss in terms of fidelity to them. Here there is a very annoying hiss in the beginning of the VSC recording that is simply not there on the hardware recordings. It's easily audible even through cheap speakers. The HW recordings sound a lot richer.

Now I don't have this software. Maybe some people who have it would be interested in doing a more thorough comparison to see how close it comes to a real synth?

Virtual one sounds much more lively than the original card.

If you consider weird buzzing sounds as "lively" you must have very different ears... or were simply deceived by the higher recording volume of the VSC sample.

This is a pretty advanced example, but here is a playback comparison using a small demonstration sequence that I made for the SC-55mkII a few years back:

Original MIDI file

SC-55mkII output

Virtual Sound Canvas 3.23 output

Bear in mind that, outside of basic GM/GS stuff, the "SC-55 compatibility" between Roland's own hardware modules isn't super great either (for a number of reasons). Play the same sequence on an SC-55 or SC-88, and you'll hear what I mean...

Haven't even thought about more advanced features like filters. Looks like compatibility is really going down the drain here.

These noises are tolerable. And you can filter them.
The original sound canvas 55 sounds more pleasing to the human ear and the bass is very nice.
But Virtual isn't bad at all. And it sounds more lively and vivid compared to the original one.
