Hiya!

during this GOG.COM sales period I finally grabbed complete collections of Sierra games. Awesome price BUT the installs are butchered 😖 , mainly the setup programs like install.exe that lets you configure sound options.
Is there a patch or .zip or whatever out there that will add missing files to these collections? King's Quest, Police Quest, Larry and Quest for Glory series

Haven't really bothered with Sierra adventures in the past, I only have the Space Quest 5 3.5" floppy disk version 🙄

I don't really want to download them from "other" places, the point of buying them at the first place was so that I did not get them warez'd... too bad GOG butchers them 😐

Keropi there are two options!

You can get installers here: http://sierrahelp.com/Patches-Updates/NewSier … Installers.html

The other option is simply editing RESOURCE.CFG with a text editor. Here you tell the game what audio drivers to use. I use this method as it is very easy and simple to use 😀

Sometimes, they do butcher them and we have no choice but to.... 😁

My original Police Quest Collection which includes SWAT 1, came with a horrible install program - a single batch file to install all games by choice and installs the sound cards on the first run. After that, there's no install program within any directory to change your settings, other than editing the resource.cfg file. And the bloody manual left out important copy protection information - not all the mug shots for PQ2 had names beneath them - so some questions you won't know the answers, inspite of having the manual. It also conveniently left out the locker codes for both the PQ1 VGA and PQ3. The texas poker leaflet thingy for PQ1 was also nowhere. I had to download all these.

And I bought the sealed box from the software store directly, and it was published by Sierra itself. Dang. (It was the UK edition, I think - the one with the "landscape" format box with the target practice cardbox thingy.)

Ooops....I guess I've let too many cats out of the bag already...hehehe...

It's highly unlikely GOG will ever include the install files in a patch or add-on, but it's worth a try to ask them once, I guess.

These collections really screw things up, even from the older days where so many publishers start to put all these so called collections on CDs and distribute them.

yeah, I have read more about Sierra games/protection and it seems a mess... haven't played my copy of SQ5 yet but now I bet that the "space newspaper" is actually a copy protection sheet or something...
Some collections seem very messy sadly...

@Mau1wurf1977 : Tried the KQ1 and KQ4 installers, sadly they don't add missing files 😒

I could go through my files and upload just config setup programs, missing drivers.

GOG Betrayal at Krondor also (missing install). Seibert's Pepper's Adventures in Time lacks lots of DOS drivers. Some versions of TIM1/2 lack config installer (whatever reason). Yserbius trilogy (offline) lacks MT32/FM config switch in some copies. PQ Most Wanted did similar thing as PQ Collection (no decent installer).

Try here for PDF docs. Or if someone has rotted, poor-quality.

The GOG collections are based on the 2006 VU collections. These were a hodgepodge of games from different sources. Some from earlier collections and some that seem as if they came from warez sources. They were assembled by people that didn't really know what they were doing and ripped out files that they thought were not needed (including some DRV files) and left files that ere not needed. They were poorly configured. The Steam Sierra games come from the same source, but were never improved in any way.

I did a long post about it here: http://sierrahelp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=657

For the 2006 VU collection I created patches to restore all of the missing files and properly patch and configure them. It also includes a binary level patch to upgrade KQ7 v1.4 to 2.00b with a DOS interpreter so it can be run in DOSBox.

I have been told that they work with the Steam versions, too. They will probably not work with the GOG versions a s GOG splits the collections into three and uses a different directory structure. Currently, I am investigating what the GOG versions need.

EDIT:
Oops. Just missed Collector's post.

yep, I have found your patches and already tried them several hours before, amazing work! 🤣
ofcourse the GOG version does not work with them like you said, anything I can do to help? A GOG update-patch would be a god-sent, verified and trusted games from a good source? It's a no-brainer! 😊

@tilakat:
thanks for the files, ultra useful! 😁 I can make complete games now it seems 😀

My patch might work if the directory structure was changed to match the 2006 VU collection before running the patch. i.e. "kq4", "kq5". "kq6" instead of GOG's "Kings Quest 4", "Kings Quest 5" and "Kings Quest 6". At least the patch would find all of the individual games' folders.

OK, it is looking for a file to ID the collection. Drop a file in "New Folder (3)" and name it "SierraLauncher.exe". Then see if the patch runs.

sadly it does not seem to help... upon running the patch it nags it can't find the collection, when you point it to the directory it just shows the same error again... also you can't choose to install the 1st KQ1 version, a window pops up asking having files from the collection copied to the hdd

I would seriously just edit the RESOURCE.CFG file. There are games that need paths changed for example, so you might as well get used to them already 😀

The audio drivers are usually found right in the main game folder. Just change the drive in RESOURCE.CFG and you are good to go.

I have modified my patch for the 2006 VU King's Quest Collection for the GOG KQ collections. It will find any of the installed GOG KQ games. Unlike the original patch, this will not modify the GOG installations, but will instead use them for a source for the game files. The GOG installations may be uninstalled afterwards, if desired. It restores all missing install and driver files. It will also apply all missing patches and optimally configure the games.

For KQ6, it will set the game up using both DOSBox for the DOS version and ScummVM for the Windows version. This will allow people on x64 to enjoy the Windows version for the high res dialog images. If you have the GOG KQ7 & MoE collection, it will apply the modifications and fixes from my MoE installer. A member of SHP, Aroenai, has invested a fair bit of time developing fixes and improvements for this game. Among the various improvements:

  • Includes Zeckensack's Glide Wrapper for improved graphics and higher resolutions. This also may be necessary for Windows 8 users.
  • Improved fixes for cutscene lockups.
  • Works with netbooks or PCs with no CD drives.
  • allowAltEnter enabled by default.
  • Always report enough free space for New Game
  • Game no longer deletes/copies files when loading new levels - The installer will unpack levels for dramatically improved load times.

wow, MEGA thanks for that , will try it right away!

@Davros:
are you referring to "\Desktop\New Folder 3" path? that was just a copy test to see if Collector's patch recognize the GOG files, that's not an installation folder 🤣

edit: the patch is just AMAZING, thanks for making it! It's what GOG should offer at the first place IMHO...
do you also have plans to update your other collection installers ? 😊
