I wish Linux had better support as a gaming platform. Anything to be able to move away from Microsoft who don't seem to give damn about the PC as a gaming anymore. I really don't like the direction the company is going in.

Intel already dropped support in the 7 and 8 series chipsets. There are no XP drivers for the integrated USB 3.0. I am pretty pissed that Microsoft refuses to add true generic XHCI driver support to 7. Only Windows 8 comes with it.

🤣 well seriously it just seems to, that people will begin to make unofficial service packs for XP then, and run dual installs. If not running XP in a virtual machine.

I'll be happy to use XP with unofficial packs. I'm sure there will be a cult following for XP, looking at how much people do like XP, like I do. 😀

I'd love to have a 7900 GTX for a Windows XP machine, probably the best card before the DX10 era.

I have two machines for more or less daily use, and I had to replace the system drives for both within the last 3 months. Put Windows 7 64-bit on one of them, for the sake of a >4GB RAM upgrade. The other got a fresh install of XP Pro with all the recent updates (yes, the unofficial packs are already going strong). No reason to drop the "old" when it's perfectly adequate for what I want it to do.

No use in "getting with the program" either... I let others waste their time, money and blood pressure on constant upgrades and freshly buggy software. When the time really comes to upgrade, I'd rather learn from others' mistakes than make my own. ;)

8 GB RAM

It's going to stay that way. I have a modern machine with Windows 8 that I find to be quite nice. I don't get the hate, the Metro interface is really just a fancy Start Menu when you customize it.

The GTX280 in my XP system is with the Athlon II X3 450 CPU.

Have 8GB too, since I also dual boot with a 64-bit Linux in this system.

Most people just hate it because it's the cool thing to hate right now.

Internet hate is fickle and fleeting. They'll go back to hating (insert tech company here) in a few months, or whenever Slashdot/Reddit/4chan/Tumble/Imgur tells them to.

Win8's dumb UI is even more a non-issue once you install Classic Shell. I ran into some compatibility problems with 8 when I was using it though, and MS has been pushing out tons of bug fixes for it. I will probably install it again once 8.1 comes along.

But I have to say there's little reason to not just stick with 7.

As long as I have DMX 6 fire, I will also continue to stick to 32-bit Windows XP. And thats about it. For everything else, new Ubuntu and Windows 7 do just fine.

Any particular reason? I don't own one, but the system requirements do list Vista/7/8 64 bit.

Even if it is mainstream to hate "Winblows 8" it doesn't change that fact that it is the worst os that M$ has put out since ME. Even Vista (with updates) is better. I have my doubts that 8.1 will be the end to all the issues that exists with 8. Staying with XP and 7.

The compatibility issues I have run across involve XP era multimedia applications. Quite a few of them require Desktop Window Manager disabled in order to work right. MS took away this option in Windows 8. Of course I really don't see the point of DWM in 8 as they took away Aero for no good reason! Oddly apps that date from before XP work perfectly fine.

That sounds more like an opinion than a "fact". 😉

As long as I can still use Firefox and play the latest versions of TF2 or whatever emulators or sourceports I'm into at the moment, XP will remain my main OS of choice. I might make Win7 my main OS if I upgrade my hardware, but more likely I'll just switch to a good Linux distro.

It's not an "interesting decision" at all.

XP uses a completely different display driver model to Vista/7/8. The decision is clearly logistical. Not a case of killing XP support, but rather of only continuing development on the WDDM driver.
