Windows port from DOS games

Postby theelf » 2013-7-21 @ 10:28

Hi, I was not sure if post this in Windows or DOS area, but I think is best here

I bought a nice very small fan-less computer, and now is running Windows XP from a 16GB CF card

Of course, the best is to play DOS games  but if with a windows version much better!

I try to compile a list of windows version of DOS games, don´t care if is a "port", engine, or just official

JUST THEY RUN IN WINDOWS WITHOUT DOS, EMULATION, OR WHATEVER IS NOT WINDOWS NATIVE

If people, can help me to do the list, I will be very happy, for sure, I´m missing a lot of games

For now, this are the games I found, please, correct mistakes

This list is specially made for all this Pentium 3, Athlon XP, low end Pentium 4, etc users, that have a lot of power for windows games, but no real DOS sound card or power for DOSbox, and want to enjoy DOS games too

- Temporary count: 216 DOS games are playable on windows without emulation

The Wikipedia say: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Index_of_MS-DOS_games

3556 total DOS games then, a 6% of total dos games are already playable on a native windows way

You know, many of the games on your list don't even have DOS versions. Backyard sports series being obvious examples

not to mention you forgot official windows versions of sci games like Kings Quest V...
Voodoo2s aren't 100mhz stock
Geforce256 isn't released as a beta on New Years '99 under the Quadro brand
DOS gaming isn't a bilinear 320x200 16:10
DOS PCs aren't better than the Macintosh
DOSBox is not for running Windows 9x
SGL != Glide

About scummvm, I just copy paste from website, I need to check them one by one, lot of work, that's why I ask here. If you have time, do a list of windows only games from the list, to remove them

I add Kings Quest V to official, but is is playable in scummvm, for me is ok, I just wanna play all this DOS games with native windows port, official or no, thats why the list

For example, I know there is a official WinDoom, but I think prboom, zdoom, etc are better

Thanks

Those aren't usually 'pure' ports though. Check out Chocolate Doom. Not to mention the Doom3 BFG Edition counts as another official port...

Re: Windows port from DOS games

I think a list of direct Windows ports would be more specific, since ScummVM as a virtual machine that runs data files from many different games take up the bulk of the list, and can be grouped as "ScummVM compatible games". And ScummVM itself has been ported to many different platforms, since it's a sort of virtual machine that runs on a platform, not unlike Java or Dosbox.

It's hard to say many of the games are ports, since it's the ScummVM that is ported here.

Those official and non-official direct ports seem to be the more likely candidates. Official ports like Warcraft II and Wing Commander I & II, and unofficial ports like Doom engine ports, Dune Legacy and Ultima's Exult engine, etc., being the examples.

Am I right? Or did I get it all wrong?

Like I say in the original post, I really don't care if is a port, official, engine, etc the only important, is that I can play the game in Windows, without emulate DOS or using ntvdm, etc

When I finish with DOS games, my next list will be ports/remakes, etc from other platforms, like amiga, mac, etc

Thanks

I think that would be a bit futile effort cataloging in a forum post when there's complete sites dedicated to that such as RetroRemakes

I wouldn't call DOS games played in ScummVM Windows ports. In fact many of those games run better in DOSBox than with ScummVM. Also, "a windows version much better" is not necessarily true. The SCI games that have Windows ports are often far buggier than they are with the DOS interpreter and usually do not offer anything over the DOS. KQ6 for its higher res dialog images and Phantasmagoria 2 for its non-interlaced videos being the exceptions that prove the rule. In fact, I regret the 16-bit Win only games that cannot be played in DOSBox without first installing Win3x.

I just want to compile windows version, like the 4 games Dominus post

I really don't really care if a game is better in DOS original version, I wanna compile all NATIVE window way to play a DOS game in windows

DOSbox is just a PC-DOS emulator and is out of my question on this post

Scumvm is a engine, windows native code, that run original DOS games, without need to emulate them. You don´t need the original exe, etc, then is perfect for my list

Is very difficult to google all day, looking for "name of game+windows port" thats why I ask for help here, because, there is a lot of DOS games I did not know they exist!!

For example, Dominus talk about Ultima games... I never play ultima games before, then is very difficult I will google for this games, because even I know they exist, there are not in my mind

EDIT: Add to the list a remake of Maniac Mansion, called Maniac Mansion Deluxe, I did not know this remake!! looks great

To cut a long story short, as collector said, those "Scummvm games" are NOT "native" Windows ports. Scummvm is just a method - an interpreter- of running those games in Windows and many other platforms, including Android, SymbianOS, etc.

theelf wrote:JUST THEY RUN IN WINDOWS WITHOUT DOS, EMULATION, OR WHATEVER IS NOT WINDOWS NATIVE

- This statement blurs what you want to achieve with this list, and contradicts with your thread title.

And as leileilol said, it's futile since there are dedicated sites for that, with each engine having it's own compatibility list. This is Dosbox forum to help run Dos games in Dosbox.

To be true Malik , don't take it bad, I really don't care if this is futile for someone. Is useful for me, hope for others too

But, like you say, if is plenty of websites, please list ONE that have a list in alphabetical order, please, because it will save all the work im doing, and I can use my time in other stuff

And a last question... ejem, you need to go to DOS (real or emulated) to play games in scummvm? you need the original exe? then is in my list, whatever is, a port, interpreter, remake, or engine

What I think you are doing wrong with this list is that you take anything without testing it. Many of those MIGHT eventually run the original game but some are already dead and never finished...

Yup, but that's why I post here, I can test any single game by myself

If I do just for me, I really don't care much, because in fact, I prefer more to collect, than play
I'm happy just to have all games in my hard disk, I don't play much

In other forums people start to answer about this, for example, a guy in a spanish forum, told me that the ultima engines, are not very advanced, and for example, Ultima 8 is not possible to finish in spanish using Pentagran, he did not test in english

Then in the list, I put a mark, that say "not very good"

I never played a Ultima game, and for what I see, I will not, not my kind of game, but Im happy to have the port in my computer
