I have built this PC back in May-June and now I'm stuck between those 2 decisions:
1.Leave Windows XP on it
2.Install Windows 98 SE.
Here are the specs of it:
Motherboard:Gigabyte 7VT880-RZ
Memory:512MB RAM
Video Card:ATI Radeon 7000,32MB
Soundcard,Network:Onboard-AC'97 and Realtek 8139
BIOS Version:7VT880-RZ F5
HDD:Seagate ST310211A 10GB (taken from an old original XBOX)
ODD:NEC 3540A and TSSTCorp SH182D(both with latest firmware)
PSU:Delux 450W
Processor:AMD Athlon XP 1700@1.10GHz

"Enter at your own peril, past the bolted door..."
Main PC: i5 3470, GB B75M-D3H, 16GB RAM, 2x1TB
98SE : P3 650, Soyo SY-6BA+IV, 384MB RAM, 80GB

If Windows XP runs fine, then I would leave it installed. Otherwise though, I think that machine would absolutely fly with Win98. Just keep in mind that Win98 doesn't like systems with 512MB of ram or more, so you may have to do some tweaking to get it to run stable.

I had a pretty similar machine from 2003 to 2010 and I kept 98SE on it for the longest time because it ran screamingly fast. Good times 😀

512 MB RAM and 10 GB HDD are too small for WinXp, imho... Too much swapping.

Asus P4P800 SE/Pentium4 3.2E/2 Gb DDR400B,
Radeon HD3850 Agp (Sapphire), Catalyst 14.4 (XpProSp3).
Voodoo2 12 MB SLI, Win2k drivers 1.02.00 (XpProSp3).

Yes, keep XP on it. But I'd upgrade that CPU. I upgraded my XP1800+ to a 2600+, and it made a huge difference. e.g. no more slowdown in Serious Sam 2. My motherboard only does 266mhz, but your 400mhz fsb motherboard could take a 3200+. One step down from that, a 3200+ goes for just $10 on ebay. Well worth it.

Well,I can't upgrade it.Since I'm in Romania there's a difference of the money, and the 10 bucks I had I spent on a Asus M4A78 PRO because I really need an upgrade for my primary PC.I modded the bios with Ucodes borrowed from my motherboard (M2V-TVM,even though my version of it is oem)to support my Sempron 3400+.Also spent 450 bucks (again there's a difference of money in Romania)to repair my laptop screen.(a poorly made Aspire 5349).And by the way:if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

512mb is really too small for an updated copy of windows xp, 98 would fly on it, and you could use it to play old dos games and early to mid 2000 games. you could also install kernel-ex to it and get some xp app compatibility and run a newer web browser and flash.

cdoublejj,it's an old XP lite disc I used because I have a really small HDD atm,10GB but it's going to be replaced by a 1TB SATA HDD I extracted from a Verbatim external HDD(note to self:any enclosure like this might have an treasure inside!)
