Hello VOGONS!
Today I came up with 2 old sets of mobo/cpu and I need your advice on what to choose for a gaming system with Windows 98SE and 320MB ram.
Mobos
-QDi Advance 10E: VIA 694X/686B, 2+2 USB, AGP 4x, UDMA66, 5 PCI, 1 ISA, max 1.5GB RAM
-Intel D815EEP: i815EP/ICH2, 2+2 USB, AGP 4x, UDMA100, 5 PCI, 0 ISA, max 512MB RAM, onboard vga
CPUs
Pentium III 800MHz (FSB 133 Coppermine)
Pentium III 1000MHz (FSB 133 Coppermine)
The obvious choice is the GHz CPU which is supported by both mobos, but the big question is about the mobo!
I'm not gonna take advantage of the 512MB+ memory support of the VIA.
The Intel can be more stable, has UDMA100 and official drivers on the site, but the QDi actually allows overclock [but it only seems to have 140/150MHz option and the system is not stable at 150x7.5=1125MHz. At 140x7.5=1050 only Mhz it's ok]
So which one to choose and why?
The last question is what VGA is the best to buy for this system? A GF3 maybe?
I will install Windows 98SE on an 80GB HDD and accompany them with maaaany games up to ~2002 era.
Thanks in advance! 😊
