Just had this idea...

We always get "fresh blood" and people building systems.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a ZIP file with an assortment of benchmarks and tools ready to go?

So to make it easier to document and compare systems without having to hunt down files on the Internet?

For DOS I have a nice collection I could put together, but for Windows 95/98 I'm finding it hard as I don't have much experience. If the benchmarks need something like .NET or similar runtime pack, I guess we have to include it as well.

Great idea! I know Feipoa have most of them, but they shouldn't be too hard to collect on the internet.

I know the CD's for the Ziff-Davis benchmarks (Wintune, WinBench, 3D Winbench) are available at archive.org

Ok cool.

I'll work on a DOS archive. But will definitely need someone to chip in with the Windows stuff 😀

All Winstone edition were only available as CD for the price of shipping&handling (too big to download as ZD called it back then). It also came bundled for free with countless PC magazines

I've sent a PM to some on Vogons who claim they own Winstone 97 and 2000. Please let me know if anyone else got something on a CD.

PCBENCH v9, from the Ziff-Davis industry
standard PC benchmarking series. This one is
for PCs running DOS, the more recent DOS, the
better. Req. a 386 CPU or better; min of 4 MB
free RAM; min 30 MB free disk space on each
disk drive you want to test; min of 524 KB
free conventional mem if you plan to run ALL
the tests. Some tests have additional
requirements. 9.0 is the latest release & it
differs from previous releases in important
ways. Do not compare v9.0 results with
results from earlier versions. Tests run
under PC Bench are DOS-based tests & will not
reflect performance when running Windows.
Free, downloaded from http://www.ziff.com. 11/15/94.

This site contains loads of old results from several benchmarks (including 3Dbench): https://web.archive.org/web/19990422163902/ht … .com/bench.html

Chris' 3d Benchmark was designed as a replacement for the (now outdated) 3dbench. Chris' 3d Benchmark runs in 32-bit pmode, has support for VGA and 640x480x256 SVGA, has microsecond timing accuracy, and uses a rotating 3d enviroment mapped object as the basis for the benchmark. I believe it to be a very good overall representation of how well any given computer will run today's modern software.

I think we should plan for a larger project simular to Phils ultimate VGA benchmark.
Lets choose ~10 Windows 9x benchmarks mixing CPU, 2D and 3D graphics.
Perhaps ~5 games or so as well.

It would be great to have a huge database with performance numbers for different platforms with different CPUs and video cards.
Windows 9x cover everything from fast 386* systems to "Optimal Windows 9x builds" with late P4 or Athlon XP CPUs

This time I think we should start of with a "test period" where some of us idiots with lots of time for these things could test the benchmark suite on a few systems.
This way we can see which benchmarks work well and which do not work well and so on before people start submitting results and the benchmark suite gets "finalized".

*Or perhaps late 486 / early Pentium depending on the benchmarks.

These are some tests that I would like to see included in the benchmark suite.
I think this suite should be rather large but that certain tests are needed to get a combined score.

Sandra 99
CPU tests and Memory speed test.

3Dmark 99, 2000 and 2001. Perhaps Video 2000 aswell.

A PCmark suite. 2002 is the oldest I think.
Not all slow systems will be able to run it but its a given for the systems that can.

Quake 1, 2 and 3.
GL accelerated for the systems that support it.

Great idea! I see there are quite a few benchmarks I haven't tried yet... Will you make another Google Docs spreadsheet for this, when you finish the benchmark package?

I also had the idea once of using Fractint as benchmark tool. We could make a preset to render, say, a 2048x1536 fractal image and see how long that takes on different systems. Since the image can be rendered directly to RAM instead of the screen, this would make a good raw CPU/RAM benchmark, independent of the graphics card. Fractint uses integer math by default, but can be configured to use floating-point for certain fractal types, so FPU performance can be measured, too.

I think one of the Descent games (1, 2 or 3) had a timedemo available or a fly-through.

Ok so we got quite a few links together.

I guess we need to start downloading and testing them 😀

Ideally I would like one big ZIP archive. And inside all the Installers. I'd like to avoid having a ZIP inside a ZIP, especially those self-extracting archives.

We also need to put some essentials on there such as DirectX and anything else that might be needed?

Drivers and all of that will be up to the tester of course.
