Not really sure for brands and model, but certainly there were some. It will give him 1GB of max memory (nevertheless he needs 512s for the 98 SE), ISA slots and ... he'll follow the legendary BX path 😀

True and it's actually a good suggestion!
That same seller also sells pin modded Tualerons and those are a bit cheaper too 😁

Problem is, finding a s370 BX board (the vast majority are Slot 1), I think I only have a single one in my collection, the 815's, 810's and VIA's were a lot more easy to find.
But I reckon (and mind you, I haven't actually looked for one) these will be cheaper because they are basically the second slowest/oldest s370 boards in existence (except for those s370 LX boards that won't run anything but the black Celerons).

I've warned about this a couple times here on Vogons. I "think" originally Intel created special HSF's for it's s370 chips which came with the IHS, but the ones I've seen (and often the original Intel HSF's go missing before I actually buy the boards they were originally mounted on) came with weak plastic tabs that easily break.

You can use standard Socket A HSF's but because these HSF's are designed for chips that aren't so tall or thick, mounting such a HFS on a s370 chip with IHS requires quite a bit of force, risking that one of the little plastic tabs that are part of the CPU socket, break.
If you don't use a standard Tualatin HSF made by Intel (and I wouldn't recommend them anyway due to said weak plastic tabs), then I'd recommend you get one of those Socket A HSF's that come with 3 holes in the mounting clip instead of one that only has 1 hole in the metal mounting clip, purely so that the risk of breaking such a tab is smaller.

From your statements, I am also interestend in Epox EP-BX7+ Rev. 1.0 (Intel 440BX) and TUSL2-C . I understand that these periodic CPUs have differnt socket pins and tabs at the back. Can you give the links of these motherboards and CPU(P3-S Tualatin 1.4GHz with 3holes in mounting clip)? Still, I have a problem to choose good case and CRT monitors.

Note 4: I will build another rig as a maximum pure DOS 7.1 machine like Mau1wurf1977. (Dos games from 1980's~2000)
Note 5: I did not build a PC yet but I can disassemble and assemble it with each of components' manuals and suitable tools. I have been disassembled a 2003 junk Pentium 4 XP machine a week ago. The size seemed to be middle tower but when I opened the case, internal was absolute small sized with LP motherboard and crappy that contained Win 9xish spec such as a 256MB RAM, no GPU, ATA 40GB HDD rather than NT requirement. PSU and CPU were hard to remove that the case design was terrible and different from others (remember this pc was slim typed).
Note 6: Are 256 MB and ATA 40HDD(despite of ATA is impossible for DOS and 9x kernels) good for DOS 7.1 machine?

ATA drives are entirely possible and usable for DOS and Win98se, most people didn't use UDMA / Ultra-DMA drives in Win98se/DOS, most folks just used normal 2GB ATA drives, some folks used 1GB ATA drives for Win98se, anything 10GB and above for 98se is actually above the normal / typical usage of that time.

And DOS... most people in the DOS era only had 200-500 MB hard drives, some even smaller than that. During the early DOS era all we had were the older ATA hard drives. Older versions of DOS was out for many years before Ultra-DMA even existed.

Edit: Also you can install Windows 2000 (NT) and WindowsXP (Based on NT) on a 4GB ATA-33 hard drive, I've done it before and it works, it's just doggedly slow.

So it is okay to use 120GB ATA HDD for Win 98 SE right?

You can try and see i it works. With drives that large you may have problems with the motherboards even reading the full size, or at all, and may have problems getting 98se running on it. I've had problems with 98se working at all on even a 80GB hard drive in my AthlonXP Win98se machine (blue screens, crashes, lockups), but switched the same system for a 10GB drive and it runs normal and perfectly.

I see. What is a possible maximum ATA type HDD for Win 98 SE? Can you give the best case and crt monitors for me as well? Is IDE ODD compatible with ATA HDDs?

Personally I've used 20 gig harddrives for Windows ME and this works fine. 98SE doesn't actually need a lot of space unless you're going to install a LOT of games on them.
IDE ODD's are compatible with ATA HDD's, remember that virtually all motherboards of that age came with two controllers so, even though you can attach 2 devices to one controller, you can use the first controller for your HDD and the second one for your ODD (just be sure to get 2 cables though, preferably flat 80-pins cables).

The maximum HDD size depends also on your motherboard though. If you're unlucky, your motherboard may not recognize the largest harddrives and you may need to flash the BIOS to get these drives working. The smaller the drive you use, the smaller the risk that your HDD won't work.

I don't know from top of my head the largest disk size 98SE can work with.

And another hint: If you're going to be using an English 98SE, theres an unofficial service pack available which "updates" your OS, but this is sorta another matter though.

For Windows 98SE, just do a search on ebay (drats that awful search feature of ebay, torch it!) and some will probably come up.
DOS 7.1 is basically a Windows 98 stripped of it's GUI and was never released as a standalone OS. If you find it on ebay, then it's probably illegal.

I haven't a clue about the IBM stuff. Personally I just stick with any nice clone case that manages to find it's way into my house 🤣

The PSU you could buy locally (just get a new one in a computershop near you somewhere), no need to find one on ebay.

I'm not sure if the unofficial service pack for 98SE contains all the updates. Iirc it started out that way, but the creators of the unofficial service pack for Windows 98SE have later started to include all kinds of improvements (though mainly improvements that aid in running 98SE on a more modern rig I think).

If you want to find the 2 specific motherboards, then just do a simple ebay search and see if anyone has one for sale for a price of your liking 😀
After you find them on ebay, feel free to post the links here so I can check out if anything might be a problem (like bulging caps or extreme shipping costs).

And about the floppy cable, you could either just use any standard floppy cable you happen to already have or just buy one on ebay. I'll assume you're not going to use one of the 5.25in floppy drives, so any modern floppy cable will do.

Im using normal socket 370/A heatsinks.
It works fine but I did bend the mounting clips a little to lessen the tension.

Remember that the TUSL2-C does NOT have an ISA slot so you will not be able to use the SB64 with it.
For 98SE just get the cheapest one you see. I saw one came with a stick of PC-133 memory 256MB, handy.
And about the memory, make sure you don't buy DDR, you'll need plain SDRAM. Tip: Search for PC-133 modules and then pick a couple 256MB modules with 8 chips on each side (in case you do find the BX board, these sticks have better compatibility then 256MB modules with only 8 chips on 1 side and 512MB SDRAM modules)
I don't trust IBM floppydrives, I'd suggest you get a different one not made for IBM (IBM floppy drives are not IBM compatible 🤣 )

The case, that really depends on what you want. If you want a more period specific case, then second hand shops are the way to go or a local variant of craiglist. If you buy a new case, then all options are open. Just get any you like and go get it 😁
The memory modules seem ok and even though they are just 128MB, they seem relatively cheap.

Your floppy and ATA cables seem exactly what you need. You'll only need to buy other ones if they turn out to be too short (but that depends on the case and board you intend to match with eachother).

The best BX board? Usually that will be a Slot 1 board, but for what you intend to do, I'd recommend you find a s370 BX board (I listed a page earlier in this topic which has ALL Socket 370 boards along with their chipsets. Just avoid any of the crappy brands like ECS and PC-Chips. Most brands are good though). For Windows 98SE it doesn't matter what BX board you get btw, just get any that is cheap.

The best BX board for me is Asus P3B-F rev. 1.04 and up (you need the voltage support for P3-S). You can ask Vetz (check for this forum user) how to plug a pin modded Tualatin in it.
