On a more positive note, I do think there is merit in this idea, and hopefully it will pave the way towards a fully contained standalone MPU401 clone card, so you don't need to track down the breakout box.
We'd talked about cloning the Midiman MM401 or the Music Quest IH9MQ9 in the past, as they seemed simple cards with off the shelf components - apart from the contents of the ROMs. Nothing ever eventuated.
If you are squeamish, don't prod the beach rubble.
^ this would be awesome to achieve some day... clone a full mpu and not have to depend on finding old hardware
edit: what's the music quest card? the one listed here? http://nerdlypleasures.blogspot.gr/2010/03/tu … land-mt-32.html
No, the one I used to have, that I sold after I got an LAPC-I
My 'dream' clone card would do all this and also have a wavetable daughterboard connector 😀

ah yes, this certainly is clone-able easily for someone with the proper skills... and a card to copy from 🤣

I think that the card in my blog and DonutKing's are two variations of the same card. Consider all the similarities, same producer, same dongle design, same dongle port, same SRAM and TTL logic chips. The chief difference is that DonutKing's card required an external ROM (as the Z8 Microcontroller is explicitly marked ROMLESS on it)and the card I had uses embedded ROM. The original MPU-401 went through the same type of revision, with early boxes using discrete EPROM and later boxes having it integrated in the micro-controller. Undoubtedly this is cheaper once all the bugs have been worked out of the ROM firmware.

There is one Music Quest IH9MQ9 card currently for sale in USA.
Here you can get fantastic wallpapers created by a friend of mine: patreon.com/Unpocodrillo
^ I've seen it already, decided not to bother because of that moronic "ebay global shipping" crap that is just a way for ebay to grab more money. Will try to source one via other means. Once everything is desoldered on it , it should be easy to design a replacement pcb 😈

^ ah thanks, I'll pm you on AmiBay if this doesn't go for silly money 😁

Great news!! What's the next step? Mass produce the cards? Clone a MPU-401AT? Better yet on a PCI bus?

I am aware of that, but PCI would be cool because it would allow to save an ISA slot. For those who like to use Socket 7 and Super Socket 7 systems.
