First post, by retrofool
Well after tripping over my retro machines too many times, I thought long and hard about how many machines I really need. Realizing I only really play games from DOOM on up I finally settled on 2. The choices I made were based on utilizing only what I had and not having to buy anything:
Box one;
Gigabyte GA-5AX rev. 5.2, F4 BIOS MB, 256 MB RAM, main CPU an AMD K6-2+ 570. (Chosen for CPU versatility, can go down to a P90),
40 GB WD 7200 RPM HD, 48x CDROM, 40x CD writer,
ATI Rage Pro Turbo AGP, 8 MB,
Matrox M3D PowerVR PCx2,
S3 ViRGE 325 PCI, 4 MB,
2 VOODOO 2`s in SLI,
3COM LAN card,
SB AWE 64 sound card,
WIN 98SE
Box two;
AOPEN AX34 MB, 512 MB RAM, main CPU a pin-modded 1.4S Tualatin. (Again for CPU versatility, will run every S370 I have down to a Celeron 366),
60 GB WD 7200 RPM HD, 56x CDROM, DVD RAM drive,
Diamond Stealth III S540 Savage 4 pro AGP, 32 MB,
Matrox M3D PowerVR PCx2,
Obsidian 2 SBi single slot VOODOO 2 SLI card,
3COM LAN card,
Aureal Vortex 2 sound card,
WIN 98SE
Box one I have Mech 2 and Tombraider on all 4 graphics cards and I can run Terminal Velocity with the ViRGE patch.
It can take me up to 1998 games pretty well.
Box two I can run Unreal and Rune on S3 metal and Half Life games with A3D as well as glide and PowerVR stuff. it
can take me up to WIN XP`s release so any games from then on I can run on my modern machine.
All the rest have gone into storage, now I can see my living room floor and my girlfriend is happy (mostly) 🤣.
What does the VOGONS crowd think of my choices?
can't seem to throw anything out...
