when I try use 4k resolution with hexen it freezes

I guess he means the Steam version of Hexen. The Steam version uses DOSBox, and ASFAIK the game does not even use resolutions that high. Even if it did with command line arguments, I'm sure the engine will break with some memory leak or something trying to go that high.

Maybe his eyefinity/hydravision has a problem going 640x480 surface?
