Hum ... I think what probably happens is that for the 9500A selling nowadays (2013) they've discarded the much in disuse s478 gear. I'd look then for a second hand ~2007 vintage one. Or buy a new one and McGiver the mount 😎 .

yea, the original came out in the late s478/462 era. As for the P4 version, all you need is an aluminum bar between the posts on the stock plastic mounting posts. I can provide pictures if need be. As for S464/A you need the 4 mounting holes on the motherboard and zalman's adapters. These adapters will let you put just about any heatsink onto 478/462.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

I'm using a Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu on a 478 Prescott 3.2, it stays in low 60's under full load, idles in low 40's @ 20c room temperature, but does have one down side, dust collection, it's a really efficient vacuum cleaner!! See pic!
Overclocking is not an option on this crappy board, Asus P4R-800-VM ATi IGP chipset), nothing in BIOS whatsoever, it's also a picky git about RAM, and with only 2 slots this a pain. So for now only 512mb.

I have almost the same exact cooler, sale page said it worked on 478, when I got it box said otherwise. I wound up using it on some phenoms instead.

I wonder what the temps would have been if they hadn't goofed up and polished the base.

Very good but sadly missed out and it like all the rest of the really good 478 coolers it is hard to find. Don't want to bother with the CNPS7000/7700 series coolers although I used to have a bunch of them.

How about this one (USA) ?:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/261473266622
Brand new($29.99/bestoffer), which hopefully would mean the s478 adapter is included.

Europe(some also worldwide):

or

or

...various pricing, and for the used ones one should probably ask if the correct adapter is present.

Let's just say that my experiences with Socket 478's cpu fan-heatsink installation and resultant heat production has been less than desirable. In fact, I hate the stock cpu fan-heatsink so much! Even after installing, I still "feel" it is not kissing the cpu enough.

My question is, has anyone tried fixing a non-socket 478 cpu cooler to a socket 478 cpu?

Is it possible to remove the retention bracket and install a LGA775 heatsink on it? (Some of those non-stock 775 coolers come with under-motherboard bracket - backplate). Will this be able to hold a 775 cooler on the mobo?

I haven't tried on the motherboard, and I'm at my office now. Just got this crazy idea while looking for a 478 cpu cooler.

I like the passive heatsinks a lot. Mainly due to their non-existent noise production. I'm having this crazy idea of fixing a 775 huge heatsink, which is not being used to the board.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

With a 478 cooler and a Pentium 4 2.8ghz my PC looked like an ATR-72 with its engine running inside the room. I decided to try to fix a 775 cooler, model Cooler Master Hyper T20 that I had here. I attached it with eight clamps to the 478 cooler support itself. The result was satisfactory, less noise and I believe the temperature dropped by 1 or 2 degrees, and it is not a very complex installation to do.
