I spent all afternoon Friday getting TR1 running with Glidos, and I had it going perfectly... graphics, sound, FMV, music all A-OK. Played level 1 with Matthew Hill's enhanced texture pack and it was a thing of beauty. I hit the end of level 2 expecting to see the dreaded spinning logo, and was debating whether to pay the $10, but instead I got lock-up. It just stuck at the stat screen and wouldn't load level 3. Is this the new method of getting people to pay, or do I have a technical problem?

No. That's a bad sign. Can you get TR to work without Glidos to see if you
get the same problem. Could be a scratch on the CD maybe. There isn't even a cut scene between levels 2 & 3.

This is v1.28 off the glidos web site, yes?

It was v1.27. Since reading your reply, I have downloaded v1.28, uninstalled all related files, including Glidos, VDMS, and TR1, and started over. I found that the original tomb.exe off my CD was a little flaky and played fine fro the savegame I inserted, and had no problem loading level 3. (I prudently created a savegame at this point.) Then I replaced the original tomb.exe with the VoodooRush version per the instructions. This version won't run at all without Glidos-- it just goes to black screen and I have to Ctrl-Alt-Del out. I re-installed Glidos v1.28 and tried again. It works with Glidos, but I still can't transition from level 2 to level 3. BUT my savegame at the beginning of level 3 works. You are right, the spinning logo is hihgly annoying, but I will try to get through level 3 and see if this re-occurs at the end of level 3. if not, I have a successful workaround. If so, I'll update.

No dice. It got very buggy in level 3, and locked up 5 times, forcing me to Ctrl-Alt-Del out and restart the program. The lock-ups in the level were random and did not re-occur either at a specific point or with a specific action. (I had a few of these lock-ups playing levels 1 and 2, but not nearly this many.) Then it refused to load level 4, again locking up on the stat screen between levels. That lockup is reproducible. I also have had problems several times just getting it to run at all, and a few times it's taken 3-4 tries to get it to run, so obviously something about my installation is a bit temperamental anyway.

Here's my system info if it might help anyone have any ideas about what's causing this:

Processor type and speed: Celeron 1.1 GHz
Amount and type of RAM: 256 MB
Video board w/ RAM amount and type: nVidia GeForce 3 Ti200 w/64 MB RAM
Sound board: Creative SB Live series
Operating system: Win XP Home
Running VDMS 2.0.4

Everything about running legacy software seems more complicated in WinXP, so I'm betting it may be an XP-related problem.

When you run without Glidos, are you still using VDMSound?

Are there any unusual tasks running in the background on your machine?
Try turning your screen saver off if you have one.

Which driver version are you using for your graphics card?

According to XP, I'm running driver version 5.2.1.6 dated 10/6/03 for the GeForce card.

When I ran the original tomb.exe without Glidos, I was still using VDMS and it ran fine.

I don't hve anything running in the background except a Mozilla window and the usual stuff that's always there when Windows is running.

I will try the screensaver thing.

Thanks,
Tess

I updated the driver to v56.72 from the nVidia website and turned off my screensaver and it still locked up at the stat screen.

Check you don't have nView desktop management enabled; I've known that give problems. Close Mozilla.

But really, I don't know. Locking up is usually down to something running in the background. Glidos is unusual in having a windows program and DOS program working together.

You could try removing "VESASupport Yes" from yout glidos.ini file, that might help take the strain off a celeron 1.1 GHz. Actually that's well worth a try. I'd imagine the movies stutter a bit when using Glidos's VESA support on a cele.

I found and closed all non-system background processes and turned off VESA support, and for a minute I thought I had it beat. On the first try, Level 4 successfully loaded. But when I tried to duplicate it, it locked up again 5 times in a row. TR1 seems to be buggier than ever today, and it failed to launch properly about 4 out of 10 tries, locking up so bad I had to use the reset button. I also noticed that every time I get the stat screen lock-up, when I Ctrl-Alt-Del to the Task manager, it shows 100% CPU usage, which drops to 1 or 2% as soon as I manually end the DOS window. Looks like I will not be re-playing TR1 after all. 🙁 Thanks for your insight, though.

PS: the FMV at the beginning of the game ran fine- no stutters.
