Probably a problem with the OpenGL support provided by the Matrox. You could try deleting the file Glide2x.dll from the Glidos folder, and replacing it with a different version which you can download from the "Red Baron" page of the Glidos web page. That version supports an older version of OpenGL.

I'm having this problem, but I don't know what graphics card I have as the PC was a second-hand gift...how do I find out, and then fix the read failure problem?
Thanks

On your desktop, right-click and select Display Properties. From there, click on the Settings tab and look for the Display line, which should indicate something like "<your monitor> on <your graphic card>" (eg, mine says "Samsung SyncMaster on nVidia GeForce3").

You'll find the aformentioned OpenGlide library on Paul's Glidos web page in the Red Baron section. This is an old version of the wrapper which should hopefully get you unstuck.
