Are you running on a LCD monitor? I've had a problem with older video boards not being very good at sync and hitting outside the tolerances of LCDs that have caused this or distortion in the video. I'm not sure this is your problem with this particular game though.

Interesting... I am running a LCD which is connected to an S3 Trio64V+ PCI card in the box. I've not seen this issue before with the games I've tested (over 40 now). I suppose I can try hooking up a CRT and see how it behaves.

ROTR used 640x400 IIRC.

Haha.. I wondered if you'd chime in. I've read lots of your blog postings, this one included... and I agree that OMF is a lot better. However, I still would like to get this working since I have OMF running flawlessly.. 😀

This reminds me of how quickly I went back to OMF after I purchased Rise. Was definitely one of my least appreciated PC software titles, once I realized how bad the gameplay was under the shiny graphics.

Yeah, all the ads showed those graphics and I bought into it too.. Ahh well...

I borrowed the cartridge from someone who was less fortunate to own it in '94. 🙁

I remember for a long time I didn't want to try OMF because I thought it was going to be just like ROTR. Boy, was I wrong. 🤣

ROTR is probably one of the worst games I've ever played, actually. I played the SNES port through an emulator, and while it had nice graphics, that's about all it had going for it. I remember the AI being extremely cheap and difficult to overcome, despite other people complaining about it being "too easy". Somehow, I managed to make it to the third or fourth opponent once, and I felt pretty good about myself for it.

Just for its soundtrack, OMF blows ROTR away. EPIC had the greatest soundtracks ever.

Going to be installing a GUS Classic this weekend - first time ever! Looking forward to hearing some of these games with good native GUS support. Especially OMF and my favorite - Zone 66!

The soundtrack for OMF is great, but because there really isn't a soundtrack for ROTR on the PC, it wins by default.

I also have this game, but haven't played it for a long time (not really a fan of fighting games). Also bought it because the graphics looked good, but gameplay was just meh 😒 . Only have my Socket 7 rig to run it, but it does work OK with my Acer S202HL LED 20" widescreen (my Matrox Millennium II, on the other hand, dislikes it badly):

The CD-ROM case and CD-ROM itself do look much better (and probably the only reason why I kept this game at all):

The prototype arcade version was dumped and emulated November 2012.
