Just for the record, I ended up installing a via 694x motherboard (last non exotic chipset to provide just one isa slot), piii 933, 512mb ram, 160gb hdd (bios limit 136gb, partition limit 120gb), nvidia 6800, voodoo2, sb0060, 3com pci 100mbit, nec usb 2.0 aaaand of course win 98se.

Dx9 & via 4in1 installed correctly, everything works great, very happy with it! I think it's a better choice than celly @800 with bx chipset mobo and some gf 4-5 for Windows games 1995-2000. 😀

1. Athlon XP 3200+ | ASUS A7V600 | Radeon 9500 @ Pro | SB Audigy 2 ZS | 80GB IDE, 500GB SSD IDE2Sata, 2x1TB HDDs | Win 98SE, XP, Vista
2. Pentium MMX 266| Qdi Titanium IIIB | Hercules graphics & Amber monitor | 1 + 10GB HDDs | DOS 6.22, Win 3.1, 95C

I am pretty sure I had it working fine on the FX card with that TSR. It was years ago so I'm not sure if it was only the menus that were problematic.

In my case, I got an "out of memory" error every time I tried to run the game in real DOS. This is on a K6-III+, a Voodoo 3 and 620KB free conventional memory. VESAFix fixed it for me, however I got some color corruption when initially running the game. After watching a cinematic or playing an actual level, the corruption went away. Does that sound about right?

What a great game though, I found a sealed copy for just 4 pounds when buying some other stuff that I wanted, so I thought "what the heck", I might as well give it a try. I had heard good stuff about it and I really like the rest of TTLG's games. Had such a blast playing through it, one of a kind game.

sorry to revive the topic, but if you think about it, the XBox console actually use a Pentium 3 733Mhz, but with 128k of L2 cache instead of 256k, and a derivative GPU that come from the Geforce 3 series, If you think PC-wise, the only think that suck on that console is the amount of memory, which is 64mb, and it seem like you can mod this console to have an extra 64mb as it have 2 empty "sockets", just nothing soldered there.

So that make me think, if they used a Geforce3 GPU with a P3 733Mhz CPU in that console...that mean it would be a great match, right? Though the best i have at home here is a Geforce 2 Ti 64mb (Hercules 3D Prophet II Ti), and then i do have a Geforce4, but it's a low-end one.

Because i have a small SFF setup here (Systium 525 case with its SFF Systium power supply) which have a 6x cdrom drive, Board is a MSI MS-6156VA, P3 733Mhz Slot-1, 512mb SDRAM PC133, 40gb IDE HDD, with a Voodoo3 3000AGP, Matrox PowerVR PCX2 4mb, and an SB AWE64, though i might try that Geforce2 Ti in it soon.

On another note...MicroATX Pentium 3 boards are very hard to find around here!

It is hard to make analogies with consoles because they use hardware resources lot more efficiently, especially CPU. And on PC you decide what settings to use, so "good fit" depends on your needs.

Geforce4 ti 4600\4800 and Quadro4 900/980 XGL are the best video cards for a 1 GHz P3. The Geforce FX 5900 Ultra is overkill and the FX 5700 Ultra isnt supported by the best drivers for Windows 9x.

If you need one of the best cards is another question.

New PC: i9 12900K @5GHz all cores @1.2v. MSI PRO Z690-A. 32GB DDR4 3600 CL14. 3070Ti.
Old PC: Dual Xeon X5690@4.6GHz, EVGA SR-2, 48GB DDR3R@2000MHz, Intel X25-M. GTX 980ti.
Older PC: K6-3+ 400@600MHz, PC-Chips M577, 256MB SDRAM, AWE64, Voodoo Banshee.

sadly i only seem to get crappy low-end cards for old PCs, most often i'll have a GF 5200, Radeon 7000, Rage 218, Riva TNT2 64, and when it's in the Geforce 2, 3 or 4, it'll be like a GF MX4000 or Geforce 2 MX cards...nothing really good. I do have a Geforce 6200, but it's PCI Express anyway...For now the good card i could use is a Geforce2 Ti 64mb

I tested A LOT of cards on various cpu speeds with win98se. I will post the benchmarks soon but it is a lot of data to put in graphs so it takes a little longer. I tested with v2 to v5 and tnt2 to ti4200 (more than 20 cards at 450mhz, 667mhz, 1000mhz and 1333mhz cpu speeds with p2, p3 and k6-2 cpu's).

I tested 3mark99max and a built-in benchmark from a game called n.i.c.e.2 (racegame) at 1024x768x16.

My conclusion from these tests with a celeron tualatin 1000mhz (100mhz fsb, asus tusl2-c) are:

Fastest: Voodoo5 5500, 2nd place Kyro II and 3rd place ti4200.

At 1333mhz (133fsb) the ti4200 takes first place. When AA is used it is ofcourse the much faster card compared to the rest.

Since they can be bought very cheap the geforce4 cards are a great choice. I like the v5 better because of it's glide support.

asus tx97-e, 233mmx, voodoo1, s3 virge ,sb16
asus p5a, k6-3+ @ 550mhz, voodoo2 12mb sli, gf2 gts, awe32
asus p3b-f, p3-700, voodoo3 3500TV agp, awe64
asus tusl2-c, p3-S 1,4ghz, voodoo5 5500, live!
asus a7n8x DL, barton cpu, 6800ultra, Voodoo3 pci, audigy1

yes for Glide games, a 3DFX card do a much better job, but when a game is made to be compatible Glide AND with DirectX cards (most likely Midtown Madness 1 and 2), now you can use the better one. Since Midtown Madness 2 use T&L, even with maximum details it'll be very sluggish on a V5500.

I could build a Pentium 3 1Ghz (coppermine, 133Mhz FSB), but i would need to find a decent case...and i would really like to find a Tualatin-enabled MicroATX Pentium 3 board soon...because i always have the feeling to waste space with a full ATX board as i tend to only use several slots, like 2 or 3 at most.

I'm using a Pentium 4 S478 with a 1.6Ghz Northwood-core (512k cache) with my Voodoo 5500 AGP, on a MicroATX board, while it seem to be great, some games doesn't seem to like the Pentium 4 architecture and will just crash often (Descent 3 is always crashing on this setup, while it run just great on my Pentium 3 with a Voodoo3 on it, while both setups have Win98SE with Unofficial Service Pack installed and latest DirectX for them, and of course latest drivers...)

3,3v v5 5500 agp on s478? must be a sis chipset? It is a waste on 1,6ghz p4. Tualatin p3 or athlon xp would be a lot better choice (or a much faster p4)

I actually ran a P3 866E/9800XT combo, before the 9800XT cooked itself. Ran Windows 7 perfectly fine, Aero and all.

I run a Dual Pentium 3 1Ghz Coppermine with 6800GT 128Mb AGP.

it runs Crysis Demo @ low 800x600 ~10-15fps

Generally asked: on a system with a PIII 1000 will that CPU be the bottleneck for the proposed GF4 Ti or which kind of CPU is needed to make the GF4 be the bottleneck?
