I just picked up an old machine which has 8 serial ports installed (RJ-11 connectors). I'm wondering why it would need so many. What might this computer have been used for?

I actually have a 8 port serial card here, it's like new.
I got it from work, we used it in our lab for some blood analyzing machines.
They needed a bunch of serial ports.
VT server? I remember that Dec VT-420 had serial and RJ11 connectors.
I have traveled across the universe and through the years to find Her.
Sometimes going all the way is just a start...
Some sort of CNC control maybe? Like for a machine tool or something.
I'm not sure, but I think it came from a hospital, so the blood analysis thing sounds probable.
