So, I am re-rebuilding my Windows 98SE box.
I have a Tualatin Celeron 1200, 512MB RAM, SoundBlaster 16 ISA with Waveblaster
The choice of primary video card has me at a stand still.

1. Voodoo Velocity 100 AGP (enable the second TMU) and call it a day. It is the equivalent of a Voodoo 3 2000 at that point.
2. ATI 9600XT 128MB and one Voodoo 2 (I don't have two for SLI).
3. Geforce 256 as primary and one Voodoo 2.

Any input is welcome as it is a pain in the butt to install one card and then try to clean it out completely afterwards.

Win98SE Box: PIII 850, 128MB, 8 GB HDD, CL Live!, ATI 9600XT, 2x Diamond Voodoo 2 8MB
DOS Box: Intel 80 Mhz P24T Socket 3 OD, 16MB, 128MB CF Drive, Number 9 VLB, SiiG VLB IDE, SoundBlaster 16 ISA/WaveBlaster

The Velocity 100 has less memory than a V3 2000. In practical terms this means that 1024 x 768 is as good as it gets. I found that some games will work at 1280 x 960, with some displaying missing or weird textures.

As always it boils down to what you want to do.

I would install the best video board you have available that is equal to or less than a 5950 Ultra or 9800. Then call it a day.

That being said the ATI 9600XT and the Voodoo2 looks like the best option.

With a 9600XT you could probably just run a wrapper and get better performance across the board whilst leaving an extra slot free.

Either way, the 9600 is probably the best choice.

Ah, I hadn't thought of that. A glide wrapper. How... retro

voodoo 3 3000 is perfect for that system and cheap to get, voodoo 5 even better.

Otherwise i would pick the geforce and voodoo2. If you want to use the 9600xt, i would build an athlon xp system.

asus tx97-e, 233mmx, voodoo1, s3 virge ,sb16
asus p5a, k6-3+ @ 550mhz, voodoo2 12mb sli, gf2 gts, awe32
asus p3b-f, p3-700, voodoo3 3500TV agp, awe64
asus tusl2-c, p3-S 1,4ghz, voodoo5 5500, live!
asus a7n8x DL, barton cpu, 6800ultra, Voodoo3 pci, audigy1

I would find the Geforce DDR too slow and the ATI 9600XT too ... boring.

Optimal cards Geforce 4ti + Voodoo 2 SLI.
Ebay is your friend 😀

I see and hear all of your suggestions.
I was going to build this with components on hand as I am a "picker" at my local recycler.
I will have to wait until the best parts find their way to me.
After all, new stuff comes in weekly.
