I see. Well I might give it a shot. What firewall would you recommend? Is Zone Alarm still good? http://www.zonealarm.com.au/security/en-au/zo … ee-firewall.htm

Here is my first result 1024*768 ultra quality sound enabled.

67.5 FPS. P4 530 3.0, Abit AA8 925X - optimized defaults, 2GB DDR2@533CL4-4-4-12, Geforce 6800GT 92.91, onboard audio, XP SP3.

[EDIT] The overclocked result, Good enough to be able to play the game without issues I hope.

86.9 FPS P4 530 3.0@4.0 Abit AA8 925X, 2GB DDR2@533CL3-3-3-8, Geforce 6800GT 92.91, onboard audio, XP SP3
75.1 FPS at 1280*1024.

Still no fix for the demo timedemo issue, the timedemo seem to be packed into one of the pakxxx.pk4 files... I think.

Ok I installed a firewall, COMODO. Zone Alarm wanted SP3, so I looked for another option and COMODO seems to be mentioned everywhere and works with SP2.

Steam works, downloading Doom 3 right now 😀

EDIT:

No sound in the timedemo?

Here the results for Pentium 4 3.2 GHz Northwood Socket 478, Asrock P4i65G, 2x 1 GB DDR400 in dual channel, AGP Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT, Audigy 2 ZS, Windows XP SP2, 307.83 driver.

7800gs isn't exactly period exact, but i dont think its that much faster than the 6800 ultra.

Ultra turns off texture compression and this might screw up the results because cards with less than 256MB RAM will do texture swapping to system RAM. That is really bad for performance. Depending on how often it happens, you'll see stuttering or a major drop in overall framerate. Definitely not a good idea with a 64MB card.

The visual difference between High and Ultra is minimal....

Well we are playing the game with Ultra settings are we not? 😎
I think it says 512 MB texture memory when you actvate Ultra so we are all in the same boat, good use for that fast dual channel memory.
No stuttering on my system so far. I am perhaps 45 minuts into the game, I am playing at 1280*1024 with Ultra settings.

Swapping across AGP or PCIe is ridiculously slower than the RAM on the card so you really don't want the card to do it. When I read that all Ultra did was turn off texture compression, I lost interest in it and just used High. Texture compression is not usually something you'll notice unless you do a side by side comparison of a still image.

If I had known there was no real difference between Ultra and High then I would have chosen High. To late to change the benchmark instructions now.
Do members who have posted results with 128MB cards suffer from serious stuttering?

Also make sure vsync is disabled for benchmarks.

If you want to play with vsync, enable triple buffering in the video card control panel. It will improve your frame rate.

I tested a faster CPU, a Prescott 540 overclocked to 4266 MHz. 89.7 FPS at 1024*768 Ultra quality.
Hardly any gain over the Prescott 530@4000 MHz, this game seems a little bit GPU limied on my system but it shouldnt be as the Dothan is still alot faster.

I did also run the timedemo at 1280*1024 with High quality and 2x AA, I got 69.0 FPS. I think I will continue the game using this setting.

@Skyscraper: I actually did run timedemos using the High Quality setting in my Pentium 4.

640x480=19.4
800x600=13.5
1024x768=8.8

As you can see, the difference with Ultra is minimal. Stuttering was equally bad with both High and Ultra in all resolutions. The GF4 just doesn't cut it 😒

@swaaye: All my benchmarks were done with Vsync and AA off, otherwise fps would be even lower. I also have a Dell OEM GeForce 3 Ti 200 64mb AGP card, maybe I should test it as well just to see what results I get 😈

Ooohh, the pain......

A bit of a warning.

My PCI-E Geforce 6800 GT 256MB with stock cooling is running very hot, 100C+ at stock speed. It idles at 73C at the desktop.
Use GPU-Z to see if your cards are running too hot to, it will kill the caps in the long run if not the GPU.

When I tried to overclock the card to Ultra speed it did run fine for about 5 minuts then it started artifacting... I think I know why now.
Its time to find some better cooling for this card.

Tried it on my main Desktop with a Core i7 3770, 8 GB DDR3, GTX660, Sound Blaster Z and Windows 8.1. The game doesn't want to run in full screen, it's shifted to the left and I can see the desktop on the right. But it's not in Window mode.

Anyway, the score is 294.6 fps 😀
