Lots of AGP cards benchmarked on a fast Windows 98 system.
There have been lots of discussion lately about what video card is the best choice for different Windows 9x systems.
There is no correct answer to that question and certainly not one everybody will agree on.
One issue is that its hard to compare the cards. Different members benchmark a few cards each and often get vastly different results with simular hardware.
Its clear that this is not as easy to get consistant results when benching in Windows 9x compared to benching in DOS.
The idea for this thread is simple. I will benchmark ALOT of AGP video cards in the same system with the same settings.
I will make a list or table with all the cards and their potential. I use the word potential because the performance will differ from one system to another.
When I decided on what system to use for this project I first thought of my P3 1400-S Tulalatin@1.6 and my Asus Cusl2 but I dont want to tinker with that system.
What else do I own that is fast enough not to bottleneck the cards and at the same time supports all AGP standards?
In the end I decided to use a socket A board with VIA KT333 chipset togeather with an Athlon XP 2400+ and 512 MB DDR memory.
This system is fast enough not to bottleneck (most of) the cards at the higher resolutions.
When I did choose what benchmarks to include I thought that DX6, DX7 and DX8 and early Open-GL was the stuff to cover.
I will bench the following games and benchmarks.
3dmark 99 MAX
3dmark 2000
3dmark 2001 SE
Quake I
Quake II
Quake III
Unreal Gold
When it comes to the games I will benchmark the following resolutions. 640*480, 800*600, 1024*768 and 1280*X
In Quake I and Quake II X = 960, In Quake III X = 1024 and in Unreal Gold X = 768.
Here is a short presentation of the test system with some images.
My testbench
The QDI Kudoz 7e333-a
The Athlon XP 2400+
Some performance numbers to get an idea of the speed of the system.
SuperPi 1M
CPUMark 99
Sisoft Sandra 99
I will summarize my findings in the next post but every card will also get their own post.
The plan is that I will benchmark a few cards every week until I am done or gets sidetracked.
