Hello
Program in my firm ( wholesaler ) is about 20 years ( it is was wrote just for my firm and it is OK ). In win 98 everything was good even in working by LAN.
Problems was strted when thundar damaged one of my workingstations with win 98. I bought several computers with worst cpu (one core cpu is quite problem so i can only try pentium 4 HT) but win 98 won't work properly on any of them. I'm trying some solutions with win xp workstation but unfortunately there is hard error ( ntvdm is not full DOS enviromet )

The attachment ERROR.JPG is no longer available

so and I choose that win xp pro workstation with some DOS emulator will be the best option ( my file server is running xp and other workingstations with win 98 are connected to this server by swith ).
The only emulation program that works with my is DOSBOX svn Daum ( dosbox 0.74 on first screen showing error " share.exe missing " ) ( I'dont want to use any hard disk images ) it's work very fast when I run my program locally ( on my server with xp ) and on wi 98 workstatoin but on other xp workstation via LAN is ten times slowly ( NE2000=truth, winpcap installed ).
Observations :
My old program on win98 workstations is working only in memory ( hard disk is swithed down by system after 10 minutes ) and can very fast access to files on server (with xp pro ). Xp pro workstations can't access to files on server fast.
Any suggestions?
Sorry for my english 😀

DOSBox is for games...

Getting a Windows 98 PC shouldn't be a problem. Check the MARVIN thread, lots of people build Windows 98 computers.

A couple of things. DOSBox questions should be asked in the DOSBox forum. Official DOSBox does not support share, which is just one of the reasons that its use is discouraged for non-gaming uses.

DOSBox IS NOT SUITED TO RUN YOUR NON-GAMING DOS APPLICATION

You really don't want to use it for business purposes. If you use an unofficial build you should the author of that build. Your best bet is to use a VM. vDos is one possibility - http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdos/

Not sure which country you are from but P4 generation PC's are still plentiful in many countries for very cheap. Disabling HT in bios and keeping Ram around 256MB at least while installing windows you should be OK.
Of course this is a short term solution.
installing Win98 for a true Virtual solution like VMware would be my recommendation. We use it for software that requires 2003 which is getting harder and harder to find drivers for big brand servers like HP
