Yeah I was going to say, I've done that on LAN.

I know it's not the original, but for Doom I've used zDoom, run it as a server on my machine, and forwarded UDP port 5029 on my router to my local machine.

You need to have a DNS entry for your router (DynDNS, No-IP), or your friends have to know your public IP to have an address to connect to.

On retro equipment / not DOSBOX:
IP: some games are fine (1VS1 with port forwarding). Some still have retro server communities.
IPX: LAN only really unfortunately.

I'm a little hesitant to hook up a windows 98 machine to the internet, besides my friends are not into retro gear like me.

I wonder if a firewall DMZ could be set up to keep a machine separate from the rest of a local area network, so that you don't put your newer machines at risk when you take a machine running an older OS online.

Most modern home routers have some facility for putting one or more devices in your LAN in the DMZ.

I love playing ZDaemon, which is an on-line Doom programme.

It has become somewhat unpopular in the last few years though and often when I play I realise that there aren't many people anymore, like 20-30. But still, when we're all on the same server it is fun!! Co-operative is my favourite type of match! 😈
