VOGONS

I've installed Glidos and was able to run TR for a while to test it. Then I changed the settings for the soundcard as mentioned in the site and got a line in Glidos saying "pipe creation failed 231". I tried starting the game using Glidos and got "OS detection failed".

Also the VDM "hint" box refers to...?

Many thanks,
Winnie

(Have just registered.)

OS: XP
Latest version 1.28 of Glidos.
TRI (with Voodoo) from Platinum edition. Also have the orginal version (no Voodoo, no patches).

Why change the sound card settings? I can't remember where it says to do so.

Oh yeah, and if you get OS detection failed, its usually because the last attempt to run TR didn't completely exit. Use Task Manager to kill any instances of ntvdm you can find.

It says...

"Under Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP it is better not to use the legacy drivers that come with your sound card. I strongly recommend you download VDMSound. It is free, can be installed with a single click and seems to work with all DOS games and all sound cards. If you use VDMSound then you need to add one more command to the above procedure:

E:
cd
dosdrv
install

and you need to provide slightly different sound card settings during installation:
Soundcard: SoundBlaster
Port: 220
DMA: 1
IRQ: 7

When first using VDMSound, you may find a "hints" box pops up. You must disable that before running Glidos, otherwise it will pop up behind the Glidos window and make it look as though your computer has crashed."

Mine's XP so I installed VDMSound.

Thanks for the tip regarding the "OS detection failed". I should have restarted the PC earlier on. Now that I'm going through the first level, I noticed that the sounds are only heard a couple of seconds after the action so I can't know when the enemies are killed since the huge Glidos logo is blocking the centre of the screen. Is that to do with resolution? I've set the game to 800x600 (my PC's 1024x768) full screen. Or the sound settings? I've followed the given settings.

Also, the game flickers to show my desktop while loading. Malfunction? or normal?

Well the thing to do is install VDMSound, right-click on setup.exe and choose "Run with VDMS", and then let setup autodetect.

Did that and the installing screen fades and just maintains for while. I pressed ALT+ENTER and got to starting it with Glidos but the command prompt, after loading everything, does not start the game. The box on Glidos shows
"VESA mode 0x101
VESA mode 0x101".
Nothing happens after that.

Everytime I end the game, my monitor is filled with lines , blurring my screen. That's the way it is? I just put my laptop on standby and restart and the lines will be gone but is there a way to keep the lines away?

Thanks.

"pressed ALT+ENTER and got to starting it with Glidos"? Don't quite follow what you are doing. Did the card autodetect, and did you hear Lara in the test?

Actually, maybe you are never getting to the stage of saving the sound config. Try deleting the TOMBRAID folder and reinstalling with the TR installer on the web site (selecting the VDMSound option).

Some sound options don't seem to work in TR setup with VDMS (you can tell you chose the wrong card when the audio test hangs your system). Try manually selecting SBPro instead of SB16.
