I recently started playing System Shock, and I was wondering if there was a way to get it to recognize my Gravis Gamepad Pro as an input device? None of the other joystick options seem to work very well for me.

Unless you are using DOSBox, probably not.

Wikipedia:

The GamePad Pro employed advanced signaling techniques to allow for both the use of ten buttons and the simultaneous use of up to four controllers connected by the controller's built-in piggyback plug, but games couldn't detect the gamepad unless they were coded with the device in mind (DOS) or a specific driver was installed (Windows).

There's a utility named SDWRGMPD that solves a simlar problem for the Microsoft Sidewinder.

I tried it in DOSBox and Michael Hardy's WinDOS, and neither of them work.

Can't really imagine System Shock being playable with a joypad. The user interface requires a pointing device of some kind.

neither of them work.

Please elaborate. Does the joypad work normally in other Windows applications? Does it work with other games in DOSBox?

Please forget about Michael Hardy.

True, but why does it allow for ANY joypad then?

System Shock is the only DOS game that it doesn't work in. At least that I know of...

Poor planning on the part of whoever wrote its configuration utility?

The only other thing I can suggest is to try different joystick types in the DOSBox.conf.

There are also mods and repackagings of the game that shall remain nameless but are quite easy to find with Google. If one of those doesn't work, then nothing probably will.

The Gamepad Pro should have a switch on the back for toggling between its proprietary GrIP support and the usual joystick support

I was thinking about that, but there was no mention of it on Wikipedia, so I thought that was only on other pads. Guess the article needs updating.

It's worth a try, but I'm not sure it will help much, especially if it's already running in DOSBox.
