I wouldn't bother trying to use PCX2 with a 486. The chip was considerer to need a lot of FPU performance. I think there was an interview with one of the developers of the Tomb Raider port where he stated that a PPro was needed for optimum performance in some scenes.
I'd either move the Apocalypse 5D to a faster machine (at least a faster Pentium) or sell it and get a different card. It's a waste in a 486, and that's a pity since those cards are not exactly common.
Of course the Tseng ET6100 is a good choice for a 486, but I guess you won't notice lower performance with a slower PCI video card, it probably won't even be measurable.
If you really want to have some 3D acceleration in DOS in that machine, you should better look at 3dfx or perhaps Rendition.
