OK so now that I've ordered most of the parts that I don't already have, I can go into more detail about the Win98 box I'm building. Essentially it's just a vehicle for my 3D cards I have as well as the associated games, but I'm beefing up the CPU as best I cant without making things unstable (Win98 crashes far less with a PIII than an AMD CPU), so as to compensate for the lack of power in the GPUs for some of my newer Win98 Games.
Motherboard
Jetway 993AN V1.4
CPU
Intel PIII 1400/512/133 Tualatin SL6BY
RAM
512MB
Graphics Card - AGP
QDI Vision-1 Rendition V2200
Graphics Card - PCI
3DFX Creative 3D Blaster Voodoo2
Optical Drive
Sony DDU1615 DVD-ROM
Floppy Disk Drive
Sony MPF920 3.5" - I'd like to get a 5.25" drive too but I think finding a relatively modern one with a black fascia to match the rest of it would be rare...
Hard Disk
40GB IDE
Network Card
Intel PRO/1000 GT
Sound Card
SoundBlaster AWE64 Gold ISA - Better compatibility in DOS
Case
Antec VSK-4000E - I'm fed up with beige 🤣
Monitor
Tatung TM3401 - a lovely 12 - 14" colour monitor, native res of 640x480 but does 800x600 too at a push. It's a fantastic display as it's small size means it pixellates older games less. I will weep when it dies :'(
What do you all think? The games i've got to run on it include:
IndyCar Racing II/CART Racing - the Rendition version
Nascar Racing II + Expansion, with the 3DFX Patch
Grand Prix Legends
F1 Racing Simulation
A bunch of classic LucasArts Games
Wing Commander IV DVD version
Since i'm still waiting for the Case, Mobo, CPU & Disk Drives I can't go ahead with much, but does anyone know if you can get an audio front-panel that will connect up to the AWE 64 Gold - or does it not support that? A Creative one would be nice if they ever made them.
Update:
Well the Mobo & CPU are still to arrive but here's the finished front anyway:
