Is there a difference in the resolutions each card can handle or are they the same?

Same. But the real difference becomes noticeable when you run then on SLI and 1024x768. The 8mb ones run out of memory eventually and become much slower.
Kinda like a 512mb VS a 1GB card today. On lower resolutions it's ok, but once you hit something big like 1080p the difference is very noticeable.
The standard - even back then - was a 12MB voodoo.
I remember often reading in game patches of improvements made for the 8MB cards ... so better get a 12MB one to be on the safe(r) side

I found an 8mb for $6, which is why I was wondering. I already have a 12mb SLi set.
I think the 12mb cards have problems in 1024 too so 8mb must be pretty ugly. Unreal gets stuttery frequently. PCI texture swapping.
would stay away from the odd duck 8mb boards.
I've read that Voodoo1 6mb was smoother than the 4mb for the same reason in some games.
No difference at all in supported resolutions or fill rate. Both models have the same 4 MB memory bank for frame and Z buffers. There are two additional memory banks for the texture processing units. 8 Mb Voodoo2 has 2 texture banks of 2 MB each, while 12 MB Voodoo2 has 2 texture banks of 4 MB each. They won't stutter at high res if they don't at low. Frame rate will be slower, that's all. Stuttering is due to texture trashing, much worse in 8 MB model.
Is it the same in a mismatched SLI setup or does the 2nd card simply ignore the extra memory?
What do you mean by mismatched SLI? Different brands, or different models?
I guess you mean different models. No, that setup won't work at all. Different brands is no problem if you use 3rd party drivers for mismatched SLI.
Sounds like TheLazy1 is asking if you can SLI a 8MB and 12MB. I believe you need special drivers and both will work at 8MB.

There's no driver that I know of that allows an 8 + 12 MB SLI. But you won't lose anything by trying. Who knows if recent Glide builds inadvertedly fixed the issue.
i remember 8 + 12 MB SLI being available they show up as 2x 8mb iirc

My point is that I've never heard or read a report of a successful 8 + 12 MB SLI. I mean someone actually doing it by themselves. I encourage anyone who has both models to give it a try and report back. I'd do it myself if I had an 8MB Voodoo2.
EDIT: I just found two cases of people who reported a working 8 + 12 MB SLI, so I was wrong and it is possible, after all: http://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/topic.asp?TOPI … 916&whichpage=2
EDIT#2: I have a spare 12 MB Voodoo2 that I never use (Unknown brand - reference design). I'd like to get an 8 MB one (preferably made by Diamond) and try to SLI it with the 12 MB Diamond Voodoo2 I always use for testing. Is there anyone interested in a trade? (NOTE TO MODERATORS: this is not a call for a money making trade; it's for experimental purposes only).
Just some general advice, it would help to know where you are located. If you're in NL I'd be willing to do a quick trade but otherwise shipping wouldn't make things very probable
Fixed. I thought my location was visible in my profile. I've checked shipping prices and I can send a Voodoo2 to anywhere in Europe by standard delivery for 6 EUR.
I have an unused Diamond 8Mb Voodoo 2 card that i'd be willing to swap if you're interested?
See attached pictures for card condition. it was tested working several weeks ago.
I'm in the UK so shipping to Spain should be easy!
Nice, that's exactly what I was looking for. This is the unknown brand 12 MB Voodoo2:

I'll check again that the card is still working.
It's probably one directly from 3dfx. I'm sure any other manufacturer would put their name on theirs or at least a part number that you can cross reference to get the manufacturers name.
Isn't there a trade ban in this forum?
Maybe I used the wrong word, sorry. I do not want to trade the card. I just wanted to do some testing by myself and offered a non-profit exchange. If this kind of exchange is strictly forbidden, please forget I ever suggested it.
I'm not 100% sure but I think the ban was against all kind of trading not only the kind that involves money. Since the trade is done here there is still the unwanted responsibility here.
